Current Player Thread Josh Johnson

I think he was on the injured list published last week?

" the young lad we’ve signed on loan from Oxford United he came on and I thought he had an impact as well"

Has he not worked out Johnson's name yet?

Took me a while to work out who they were talking about as I don’t know anything about either team so had to look up the subs for both teams until I found the right one.

Assume this was a bad injury for Josh as he hasn't featured again for Maidenhead since being withdrawn at the end of August.
Even if he is fit again, with us seemingly having no form of football for the young pros who are too old for the youth team, it's a struggle to get yourself up and running. Same for Max Woltman.

Think all the other young pros are out on loan - Brearey, Elliot-Wheeler, Franklin.

We have joined an unofficial league where U21s and senior players can play. Stevie Kinniburgh mentioned it in the Fans Forum on September 26th which he did with Ed Waldron.

Rowett hinting that he might be playing a part this season

“We think we can strengthen in different ways and in different areas, and whether we bring another midfielder in or whether we have someone at the club who we think can be that player, we’ve got young JJ [Josh Johnson], who’s been with us and has looked very good, and you’ve got one or two others, so we’re excited to see what we do next.”

Good to hear. I’m really surprised this lad hasn’t kicked on under one or two previous managers here. I know he got injured but there’s been plenty of time prior to that when he could have been involved. Looks to me, admittedly in the little I’ve seen, to have a lot of really good attributes.

I'm not sure he's up to the level some people seem to think or hope, yes we've seen flashes but he signed his contract three years ago and hasn't done much in that time! I hope he can push on but not sure we have the time to wait for him to do that.

Still not 21 till September. Injuries have definitely prevented his development but last season saw his most appearances for a while with 22 in the Conference. That's more than Golding at Southend.

Seemingly had his contract extended at least once as his initial pro deal was announced as being a year.

Important season for JJ, be it actually featuring for us or having a good loan at higher Conference club or above.

I thought he played a couple of nice passes early on in his sub appearance against the All Stars, but made a couple of defensive mistakes.
I honestly don't think we can judge any player either way on that match. It was the first pre-season run-out, that's all.

I’ve always been impressed the few times I’ve watched Josh .
As said by others though, he does seem to be unlucky with injuries and this has impacted his loans out to other clubs .
He came on for the 2nd half in Indonesia and had a mixed game .
The next 4 weeks could be crucial for him and determine whether he becomes a squad player or is loaned out again .
Whatever happens, I hope he makes it .

It doesn't really matter what any of us think.

The manager has mentioned him as one of the optionsfor strengthening our midfield during what is the highest profile pre-season we've ever had.

He will have known exactly what he was doing . Certainly will have been a boost for the player, espeically if we are going to be strengthening in midfield as well.

I didn't see all of the match, but did see him make two mistakes for the goal and another bad mistake a little later. I thought he looked quite ponderous and nowhere near the level required, but admit that I may not have seen the good parts.

I don’t know if it’s just me, but his mistakes in the last 2 games looked like footwear malfunctions. Maybe he needs smaller/different boots, or is still growing into his feet?
The most obvious was the conceded goal against all stars. He got his toe caught in the lumpy turf. In the Arema game his injury happened when his left toe got caught in the turf and he overextended his ankle. Get him down the shoe shop I say!

United head coach Rowett said: “His versatility, we knew that before the game. I wouldn’t have played him at centre back if I didn’t think he could handle it.

“He’s done it in training. He’s a very athletic player and I think one of his challenges is getting through games because he obviously hasn’t played that many 90 minutes.

“He’s been pretty impressive so far. A number of the young players have handled themselves really well, which is what you want to see.”

Rowett added: “What I would say is that you’ve got some players in there that look like they can certainly be capable of handling some moments in football, particularly young Leo [Snowden] in the first half. You can see a nice balance, you can see how he handled that side of the game. I think he’s got a really bright future for our team.

“I’m always a big believer that you have to give that involvement to the players. I think this tour will be fantastic for those to experience it, and one or two of those might just do enough to stay with us.”

OM website. Hopefully if they're good enough they'll be included as part of the squad this season.

Still very young lots of potential. But needs to play a whole season on loan in league 2.
