I think the comment above is an example of maybe why he’s struggled to get a contract.

He didn’t have a great game at WBA. But he was just back from the serious injury he’d sustained, stayed on the pitch too long and picked up another injury. If he was 26 you’d say ‘had a bad game, rusty after injury’ and move on.

But at 36, on the back of a bad injury, in a game where he was poor and picked up another knock - it becomes he was ‘found out’, age is catching up with him hence the injuries etc.

Bennett was great.

OK for us and did a solid, unspectacular job. Hopelessly exposed in the Championship though and an error strewn performance at WBA was the end.

Far far better than solid. Our record with him in League One was excellent, and he was an integral part of all three play-off games, providing a defensive solidity that allowed Murphy, in front of him, to flourish.

As for 'exposed in the Championship' - he started last season really well before a very nasty challenge v Preston and, despite being out for months, was chucked straight into the starting line-up at The Hawthorns after an injury to Leigh in the previous game.

Using that match in your 'obituary' is very unfair, especially describing it as 'the end' - when he went to play in a further 7 Championship games for us.

Right to let him go and bring Currie back. Age, and injuries, take their toll. But we were almost always better for having Joe Bennett on the pitch, even at this level.

It did Currie good in the long term to get a full season in League One last season too.
