I think a fair question is “was Brannagan really ready to play last Friday?”. That was essentially a reserve team hour to get him some minutes in his legs in a more sensible time, at best a week later he should probably be on the bench. Our weakness in centre midfield had him come back a couple of weeks early for me, to rest BDK, who ended up playing a decent amount of minutes anyway, we gambled on the fitness of a player we are going to need, all because of the squad limitations, thankfully it looks like we got away with it.

Was it too early? He said he was fit and ready to return. Obvious thing to say I know, but match fitness only comes with playing matches. I don't think we'd risk him for an fa cup match if he wasn't ready, and he needed minutes– ideally in a game that didn't really matter

Pretty sure Jerome said on the Dub that Cam was expected to be on the bench for the postponed Sheffield United game, so no reason to think that he wasn't ready to play 60 minutes after almost another (presumably) full week of training.

Obviously that's not to say that it wouldn't be better to have the depth there that his return could be as gradual as we like, of course.

I think the BDK point is the more pertinent one, particularly as he's come from a league which - I presume - has a Christmas break rather than four games in 8 days, or whatever it was. And of course the minutes he's played, both over the course of the season, and since mid-December, are also due in large part to that lack of depth.

I think he would say he is ready with one leg hanging off though, type of player he is.

If we had another centre midfielder in would he have played Friday night? I doubt it.

A reserve/youth/arranged friendly is a bit different to a cup match, he could feel himself into and play within himself in one of those.

Like when people were stating it wasn't our job to pluck the next manager out, it's not our job to identify the players. But, if i was put on the spot i'd like a conversation with Mark Leonard & Alex Matos for starters.
The club have clearly tried and missed out on Matos. Agree on Leonard, although I’d assume that would be a far more expensive deal to do.

But my point wasn’t that you should provide alternatives, more that as a club recruiting players for the future rather than just for now is prudent. If we do sign McDonnell he’ll both plug profile gap in our squad and be an investment in the future, and I’d be happy if Thohir is again providing the funds to go down this route.

Good point about BdK. I know others have expected more from him but we forget how much he's played, and how much responsibility he's had to shoulder in that time, particularly in Cam's absence. I actually think he's been pretty consistent generally but he needs help in there. That said, please get him off corners!

If we are talking about bringing young players in, I would like to know what our academy is doing. How long is it since they brought through a player that has really made the grade with us? It's an expensive outlay if it is not actually producing anything. If the club could get that functioning, it is a good source of young players and presumably they would have been around the first team squad and so should slot in reasonably easily (if good enough of course!).
I’ve been thinking this recently aswell. Can’t say I follow the academy closely but they seem to be relatively competitive at the level they are at. However, except Tyler, I can’t, for the life of me, remember a player we’ve brought through that looks like they might have some kind of sell on value, let alone look to challenge the first team squad. Maybe GOD will have a decent L2/L1 career but other than that my mind is blank. Would be great if we could bring through a couple of decent players, even if we could only use them as assets to sell to lower level clubs to supplement our lack of income

Nigel Clough describes Jamie McDonnell as a tackling and heading machine, I think if we do sign him he’ll prove a few wrong and prove to be a very important player for the rest of the season. A midfield three of of McDonnell, BDK and Brannagan sounds pretty good to me. If he’s physically up to the championship it screams exactly what we need.

Top of the League One tackles per 90 list on Fotmob, and he'd definitely have a chance to continue that if he were to join us. That said, El Miz is third on that list an never looked like replicating that with us - albeit perhaps in a more advanced position.

Although Vaulks has looked tired recently - and misplaced too many passes - it is unfair to call him a 'miss' overall taking all the last 18 months.
Saw he’s doing his coaching badges, wouldn’t be averse to him being part of the setup in future. He’s experienced, obviously a good egg, and speaks really well.

Any news on a potential centre-back? (saw a link to Luke Graham but don't think I've seen anything else) - would love to see someone with a bit of pace and ability to progress the ball come in

McNair was on the leaked Tiger targets iirc.

Interestingly he had a star AND a red circle around the star.

He earns ~12k p/w in the MLS, so doesn't feel hugely out of reach. Plus...another NI player that has played alongside Spencer and Brown

Who goes back if we get in another loan?
We can have more that 5 loan right? Just not in the squad at once, so it might be rotational thing each game.

If we’ve got the depth for example we might not want Davies on the bench, but the next week if we want to try play a different system we might need an extra defender but remove a forward

EFL handbook states "a maximum of 5 Players registered on a Temporary Loan Transfer can be named in the Players listed on a Team Sheet for any individual match played under the auspices of The League. This maximum shall reduce to 4 Players where a Club names a Player on the team sheet who is registered on an Emergency Goalkeeper Loan."

And that "No Club may sign more than 4 Players on a Temporary Loan Transfer from another Club in any Season, of which no more than 2 Players may be over the age of 23."

McDonell also had a hugely successful loan at Colchester in 24-25. I know it's L2, but he made the L2 PFA team of the season, which is not a bad achievement for a loanee.

For those who don't know*, Seo Ho Jung is a Korean journalist credited with breaking the news of Park Seung-soo's move to Newcastle over the summer.

No, I'd never heard of him either.

*haven't had the time to Google it, like I just did!
