Anyone that doesn’t think Matos improves our midfield options cannot understand football, surely?

He’s a clear upgrade in all areas when compared to Will Vaulks, and offers alternative attributes that should free up BDK to be more expansive.

This windows is all about raising the bar, to give ourselves the best chance of survival. Matos would be a great addition.

The only caveat I would add to that is there must be plenty of midfielders out there available who raise the bar from Will Vaulks? I think it’s a bit disappointing if we can’t get anyone in fairly soon to a position that we have known we needed a player for months.

Well, Allan Campbell couldn't hang around forever! I agree – we don't need to fixate on Matos, as much as I'd be fine with him returning. Fingers crossed we've got some good options to explore to make sure we get the right man in

Any other midfielder would naturally be an improvement on Vaulks, but there are better options than Matos out there.

For all this talk about getting more consistent championship standard players in, he’s got to be one of the most inconsistent options on the market that didn’t stand out with better players around him (Sheff Utd).

He's barely played for Sheffield United (half a games worth of minutes in the last 3 months)?

He also only started 10 games for us last season (10 off bench) - hard to gauge any consistency?

Especially as 9 of those starts were away from home - the likes of Burnley, West Brom, Middlesbrough. Hardly games (especially in a Rowett side) to showcase your football prowess to it's full potential (though he certainly did at Carrow Road - best player on the pitch).

He only started 1 home game (Leeds - treated like an away game) and he was excellent in limiting the best side I've seen at this level in 18 months.

But imagine if we used him more widely, in a deeper role, against the lesser sides too? Would it, for example, have stopped QPR (QPR!) running through at us at will in April?

He was a year younger then and still stood out against top Championship sides despite arguably being used too sparingly and, at times, out of position.

I think you stick him at DCM and we simply don't see the likes of Preston play through our midfield with ease. As others have said it would free up BDK and Brannagan too.

Our season will hinge on home games against the likes of Charlton, Norwich, Blackburn, Wrexham - we can't be a soft touch as we have been at home to poor sides this season.

I don't think we would be with Matos in there.

Matos is a certainty for me. I’d argue we need him more this season than last with Vaulks the way he currently is and the BDK/Brannagan partnership failing on the defensive front.

If there’s a player out there I think could get us out of our current funk of being way too passive in games, it’s Matos. Sure there will be others, but this isn’t the window for punts and hopefuls. Besides, shifting players appears to be a struggle so if we can get a known quantity outside the squad cap it’s a huge win.

I hope Matos does sign- permanent would be great. Loads of energy, pace and aggression. And plenty of room for improvement as well. I couldn't care less that he didn't want to sign for us in the summer- players' circumstances change all the time. Matty Taylor pulled out of a deal with us once- and John Lundstram stalled on signing until pretty much deadline day as he was holding out for a L1 club.

I would welcome Matos back but only if his heart is in OUFC. If he came here with an attitude of biding his time until a bigger club come calling then no thanks
What does this even mean? For the vast majority of players it’s just a job, and their ‘heart’ is in for whoever’s paying their wages

Isn’t that exactly what MPH has signed up for?
As long as a player will improve us between now and the end of the season I don’t have a problem with it.

Yup- I've met quite a few pros/ex-pros over the years. A small % of them have genuine affection for a club they play for/have played for. For the vast majority, it's a job- and they will go wherever they can get the best financial/playing deal. If Matos does join, he will be hoping to play 80-100 games in the next couple of seasons then get a move up the 'ladder'. And if that happens, good for him- and good for us.

One reason Matos didn’t sign in the summer could be that he wasn’t keen on playing in a Rowett side , it’s not like he had that much game time or played in a consistent position. That may be different now

If he isn’t interested but just wants a wage until something better comes along then no thanks job or no job if that is the case we can do better

Forgive me for repeating myself, but...

Last season Matos made more tackles per 90 minutes than any other player in the entire league*. Surely nobody is looking at our team and thinking 'we're already dominant in midfield, last thing we need is a ball winner'.

Matos, or a player like him, should see opposition teams have a harder time getting through our midfield. I wouldn't be surprised if the likes of BdK and Brannagan get an extra second on the ball and if the entire team shifts 5 - 10 yards up the pitch as we are better equipped to taking the game to the opposition.

*of players that managed more than 180 minutes, otherwise the stats are skewed to players who made a couple of tackles in a 30 minute cameo

I would hope not he maybe here as he’ll get game time but it’s not a lone if the recruitment team are saying hits a great signing but he’s here to put himself in the ship window then that’s poor I would have given him an 18 month contract if that was the case so if he does well for us and a club comes in for him then at least get a fee

So are you also against the Peart-Harris signing?

And were you against Rothwell, Lundstram and Roofe all signing 10 years ago?

Rothwell Lundstram and Roofe were on contracts and we got money what was it 3.75 million for Roofe where Pratt-Harris walks for free even if we stay up whereas we could have for some money and it’s money we need

Players from far-off Bulgaria and Slovenia want nothing more than to play in the famous yellow of Oxford United

If your options are at two end of a spectrum with, at one end, Alex Matos - who we know has serious potential but may or may not be 100% in love with the club, or at the other end some clogger from League One who has 'pashun' but little quality, which are you going for?

Every player apart from possibly those who have come through the age groups joins any club because a) they'll get paid, and b) they'll hope it'll lead on to something better. I doubt Cam signed from Liverpool because he was a childhood Oxford fan but because it enabled him to get game time and possibly drive a move to a higher club. It's only because he's been here so long (and because the fishing's good) that he's come to love the club. Every other player in the squad (possible exception Sam Long) would jump at the opportunity to double their wages elsewhere

As I've said on the MPH thread, I have zero qualms about players coming here as a stepping stone so long as they realise that the best way of standing out is by committing to improving the team as well as standing out individually.

You never know, they might come with that philosophy, but end up finding a home with us.

He should probably start performing at clubs like Sheffield United before making a call about which managers he will/won't play for.

He could do with the opportunity to do so. A few fleeting appearances off the bench, would be a very small sample size to determine how good (or not) he is.
