No issue with Leigh being left out. Did his job for us, couldn’t quite make the step up, in truth he should have been one we should have looked at moving on last summer. We have at least 7 more players like that actually in the squad though. Sentiment should mean very little when you’re trying to constantly improve, so says a lot about how well we’ve done in that regard….. 🤦🏻‍♂️

I mean, there's nothing to stop them. But none of the players who aren't registered can be named in a matchday squad, so you'd have 30 players getting paid just to train with nothing but a slight hope of getting registered at a later date and getting a game then. Good luck keeping a group like that happy!
But (hypothetically) they're all still being paid the same, and they've agreed to be in that position? I'm not sure that being picked to play is as much a motivation nowadays as it maybe used to be - risking injury and online abuse etc. Just heard the clip of Bloomfield saying a couple of our players have apparently chosen that route. Maybe they're happy to just earn an inflated wage for running around in a field a few times a week and maybe that could be of benefit to a club that could fund it.
(To the detriment of # teams like Oxford.)

I'm a huge Greg Leigh fan.

He's made his choices during January though and now has to accept the consequences. He's under contract so he's getting paid what he deserves. No issue with him deciding to play the game.

Players, not nec Greg, were turning approaches down. Glad the club are being ruthless.

He was literally our joint top scorer last season! And certainly would have been better than Spencer or, I suspect, Huddersfield’s 4th choice.

Still, progress and all that.

He can’t defend sufficiently for the level, Kip. That his primary role.

We all love Greg for his wholehearted way of playing. But he isn’t what we need at championship level. Not on a regular basis anyway. His strength was his strength. But his delivery wasn’t great and neither was his defensive game. Even in league one he had lapses and it was noticeable how the team improved when Joe Bennett started playing regularly.

Can see Greg being paid off over the next week so he can move as a free agent ,lived him gave his all and scored alot of goals last year ,I wish him all the best wherever he goes
Except he can't sign for anyone in the EFL because he would have had to have been a free agent during the transfer window to join another club as a free agent.

He could possibly move to a club where the window is still open or go on loan to the Conference (not that I would recommend that) but otherwise he has limited options

Harris can’t score for the level but was given a 2 year deal?

We can’t defend full stop, so Leigh gives us physicality and a goal threat at least..

I’m not pretending he’s a world beater but the guy was literally our top scorer in the promotion season, from Left back.

Spencer did some excellent defending on Tuesday, certainly better than anything Leigh could do I’m sure.

I've got a feeling Greg might go to MLS.
But nothing whatsoever to base that on.

Quite an odd situation for Leigh. Would be interested to know if he knew prior to deadline day that he wouldn't be registered especially given he was in the matchday squad for the game the next day.

Can't see a situation where he willingly turned down a move knowing he wouldn't be registered for us. Also surprised there wasn't a mutual consent exit done to allow him to bide time with options.

He must have known it was a risk esp. as negotiations were in train to leave if the right offer came in with other players being tracked.

I’d have registered him and sacked off Dembele tbh. Leigh offers more goal threat at this level and can offer something (albeit limited) at LB.

Equal number of goals to Prelec in the Championship this season (more than Romeny and Dembele), joint top goalscorer last season, six in our promotion season. Appreciate he’s now over 30, but I’d have more faith in him grabbing something at the bitter end than some of the subs we bring on. He also seemed to be a player that kept himself in good condition.

If we were to go down, I’d have liked Leigh as an option because Currie and Roosken won’t be here.

Stop talking about who we’ll have if we go down! We’ll pretty much start again though obvs we’ll build the side around Sam Long.

He literally wasn’t…

Finished 11-12 goals behind Mark Harris.

Top scorer behind Harris, Brannagan, Rodrigues and Goodrham, you mean?

As decent a bloke as he seems, he is getting paid the same amount of money to do less work, so my sympathy for his “plight” is fairly limited.
Happy to take the money rather than actually go and play games for the benefit of his career and international chances.

I think Jerome said on The Dub that he had something lined up and it fell through very late on?

Exactly this.

When you're not scoring the goals you did last season then all the attention goes back to your defending, to which has been shocking at times. If he was leaving last year then I'd be gutted, but this time around I'm fairly comfortable with it. Saying that, Dembele/Romeny should have gone before him.

Quite the allegation.

Good source for this incredibly specific and personal info?

Or is it just the usual - a hard boiled egg encased in sausagemeat sliding into your direct messages on here?

The only reference I heard was MB talking in the press conference about a few players had offers that they refused to take.

I liked Greg Leigh and scored some great goals but if his time with us is now over as we’ve improved then I thank him for his time with us and wish him all the best to wherever he goes and hope he gets a place in the Jamaican World Cup team.
Will we really have improved so far beyond Gregly if we go down - he is pretty useful at L1 level after all
