Hat trick for Jack Marriott today taking him to 15 goals in 21 League One games this season.

Remember we said there was no value in him and proceeded to spend nearly half a million quid on Will Goodwin who has 2 goals in League Two this season.
Pretty much every manager we had in League 1 wanted him, he wanted to come, but we always decided to do the “clever” deal rather than the obvious signing of a proven, League 1 striker.

We haven’t learnt!

I was going to make the same observation. The recruitment team strikes again.!

Meanwhile in 23/24, he scored 6 in 46 appearances (including 17 appearances in L2 with 1 goal) and in 24/25 he scored 6 in 30. Surprisingly you skipped over those in trying to make your point.

He was out of favour at Wrexham that year. He generally has a very good record.

He was the first choice, they just wanted more than we could pay

Goal for Tom Bradshaw in league 1 as well…

Shouldn’t have let him go!

Marriott dropped into League Two in that same window we signed Goodwin and scored once.
Six goals last season in L1 before finding form this season

Using his performances from 1.5 seasons later in a league below the one we're in to have a dig at the club feels a bit of a stretch.

Apologies if this has already been covered. But- am I right that FFP does not apply to a team in L1? So- if we are relegated, then we could turn all the current loans with an option to buy into permanent deals without being at risk of points deduction? I assume this is the case, but can someone who understands FFP better than I do confirm? Ta

@tonyw is your guy on this, but if we are in League One we fall under the Salary Cost Management Protocol (SCMP). From what I can remember, there's no restrictions on fees paid, but you are unable to exceed 60% of turnover on salary

Interestingly, just read this the other day - https://theesk.org/2026/02/11/the-a...ent-of-efl-championship-clubs-2025-26-season/

There is also a provision for owner investment in the club to be used on team building, it's how Birmingham City managed to spend a fortune last season. It has been updated this year, I think it is something like for every £1 invested in the club by owners, 60p can be spent on playing staff and wages.

A blessing in disguise...?

That's interesting, thanks. So, therefore, if the owners are going to invest (say) £50M of their own money on the stadium in this calendar year (not sure when the financial year runs) then they could spend £30M on player fees and wages? I wonder if spending very big in L1 is part of the plan. It sounds like a one off opportunity as the stadium is being built. Of course, doesn't guarantee an immediate return...

I think stadium spending doesn't count towards the various protocols.

Oxford United confirm they are now accepting relegation and are planning for league 1.

If Prelec is our first big spend on a player in League One then you can repost that in 12 months. He is f*****g s**t.

It’s something of a leap from the Head of Football Operations, to say that he/they have seen sufficient tangible evidence from Prelec, to suggest he is worthwhile pursuing.

At a time when presumably we’ll be looking to cut expenditure, rather than add to it by signing obscure, unproven, foreign imports to permanent contracts. In league 1 no less.

They failed to find anyone better.

I would question the timing of it, why not Wait until he’s back from injury and you’ve had a chance to watch him more? Unless we are just absolutely desperate to have another loaner space in the match day squad, if that’s the case though I would very much question spending 1 million quid on someone who so far hasn’t looked close to being worth that just a free up a space

I really like it. Best hold up play I have seen from a striker since Ryan Taylor, and versatile too as seen by his effective short stint on the wing earlier in his tenure. It makes sense to lock him up, as otherwise we would probably have needed to sign 2/3 strikers for next season, and now another 2 will be more than enough

And just think Walden and Mitchell could have looked a bit harder and possibly found Mohamed Touré

Let's be real and stop talking in hindsight because he scored a hat trick against our makeshift defence.

Before he joined Norwich, he had a goalscoring record of 1 every 4 games for Randers in the Danish league. Prior to that, he played in France and scored 1 in 10 games for Paris FC. Prior to playing in the French and Danish leagues, he was playing in Australia.

Had we been looking at Toure as an option, very few people would have been impressed and it's only because he's started well in the Championship that he's seen as a 'we should gone for him' target. Mark Harris started well last season and scored a few, earned player of the month and look how he's turned out.

Big powerful and fast though.
