Ex-Player Thread Jamie Donley

Good player and definitely Championship standard- he's one of the big reasons why results have started to pick up. If we do stay up, we need to get used to the ridiculous prices clubs need to pay for players who can perform at this level. If we keep taking punts on players at the £1M mark or so, expect more like Demebele rather than BdK. Does anyone know if we have to take up the option on Donley if we stay up?- or is all up to us?

I believe that it was said that it is an option not an obligation.
Mind you, having heard an interview with Donley, he was suggesting that he hasn't had a chance to think about where he wants to play, yet.

He's not worth that. He's been ok but nothing more than that. Need more from him.
Are you sure?

If we avoid the drop, and the deal's on the table, I don't see how we can afford not to sign him up.

A strong season would easily see his value quadrupled.

In four starts he's got 1 assist and 1 goal. Over a season that average would match any of the most expensive comparables in the league (Rudoni, Mehmeti, Azaz), and this lad's only just finding his feet in the division (still won't even be registered as a senior player next season).

Plus he hasn't yet got any minutes alongside BDK.

Get over the line and this signing has to be priority numero uno.

As hilarous as it would be for Spurs to get relegated, it might be best for our chances of securing Donley, that Spurs stay up this season.
How would that make any difference?

If Spurs go down Donley will likely get significant game time for them next season. He would be more inclined to stay.
Yep. If Spurs do get relegated and we stay up, it feels like there's a good chance that both Donley and Lankshear line up against us next season.

I actually had to check that he has indeed only started four games for us - it's felt like significantly more.

Of course it's much harder to maintain a goal contribution every other game over the course of a season, but you're absolutely correct that he has the potential to be our version of Azaz or Rudoni for sure (and we're due one).

And as @Northernyellow identifies above - £3.5m is much more like the going rate for a player of this calibre, at this level, at this stage.

If it's a choice of spending £3.5m once (plus a freebie) vs our preferred modus operandi of a couple of players in the £1.75m ballpark - I'm choosing the former every single time.

If two seasons at this level has taught me anything - it's that this particular cost/benefit analysis is particularly critical at the top end of the pitch...

We have an option to buy.. what league Spurs are in will make no difference

A permanent contract would be something different I think. He'd only join if he felt we were the best option he'd get.

I do think we should try to sign him and Konak, they somehow feel like Oxford players.

Konak is young, doing well in the Championship and at one of the smartest, best run clubs in football, no chance are they letting him go this early, Brentford will give him time to develop.

Yeah that's correct. We have an option to buy at a set price, but only if we can agree terms with JD. If he doesn't want to sign it then he won't come. If Spurs are relegated, they sell all of their 'big names' and say to him 'you'll be in the first team mix', then he'd more than likely stay where he is.

No as I said earlier according to Radox when he joined. All agreed we just have to do the option

Anyway he not a De Zerbi player

When he signed on loan, I said the sale of Ethan Galbraith would have been a true reflection on Jamie Donleys value.
It’s rumoured that Tottenham value Will Lankshear at over 10 million. If that’s correct Donley would be very good business.

If we are in League 1 it doesn’t even become a question. These next couple of weeks are key if we want to see players like Donley and Lankshear in yellow next season.
Even if we stay up I’ve resigned myself to Will Lankshear moving on. I’ve decided to take the Josh Murphy approach. I won’t cry that it’s over; I’ll smile that it happened.

Spurs over value players, evident by their squad that cost 700M and could soon be in our league.

I guarantee you that if spurs go down, their fans will really enjoy the Championship. A million times better than the Premier League

They will probably win it, so they will enjoy that. But if they struggle, pretty unlikely, then doing badly at a level they haven’t played at for 50 years is not going to be very enjoyable, can’t say I was enamoured of the Patterson years in the Conference.

At least it’s actually an interesting relegation battle in the prem this season, much more so than the title race.

The conference is so hard to get out of - just one automatic spot. For a team with a bit of cash there are lots of opportunities to go back up in the championship . They can act like big dogs for a season and go to new stadiums and away days.
