If I were Currie I'd be pretty miffed if I was told I couldn't play in the play-offs having played such a key part in getting there.

Cumming and Stevens were both on loan to us last year, and both played the PO final, so presume it's not an issue for loan players.
I thought Stevens was replaced by Long for the Final

We’re loaded compared to them. They would absolutely go down if they came up.
£40million in debt…wouldn’t say we are loaded.
We have very rich owners who we also want to spend £150+million on a new stadium.

When it comes to paying for new players we still be shopping in a different pond compared to most clubs in the league.

We aren’t in the bottom 3 teams in terms of the wage bill though I don’t think? (Someone correct me if I’m wrong).

We actually have quite a competitive wage bill at this level I think. Obviously nowhere near the top but between the clubs our size

Yes we pay fairly well but we still need to pay agent fees, signing on bonus, transfer fees at times.

Absolutely but my point was we are loaded compared to Orient.

Orient generate very similar revenues to us - Brisbane Road is a little smaller than the Kasstad, but they lease it from their local council rather than a vampire like Kassam.

They've just (i.e. two weeks ago) been bought by a consortium of rich American businessmen.

If those new owners are willing to put money into the club to spend up to the F&S cap (and they just sunk ~£25m into the club to pay off debts and provide working capital last week, so they may well) then - in the event they win the playoffs - they will have roughly the same spending power that we do.

We won't sell him. He's our player. And he knew Oxford wasn't in London when he signed for us. He's from Kingston in SW London, so he'll only be 50 miles away. I'm sure he'll cope. Saw him quite a lot for AFCW. Great player. And he has a long throw! Looking forward to seeing him finally play for us.

For the fans worrying about where Currie is originally from to whether he wants to stay or not, I hope they don’t find out the Brannagan is from Manchester and Vaulks is from the Wirral…

I had no idea about their takeover! Fair enough! Of course that changes things but would still expect them to struggle if they did come up

Any team coming up will struggle IMO. The difference between championship and league 1 is now as big as the difference between the Premier League and the Championship.
Yes Birmingham and Wrexham have plenty of money to throw at it but both clubs need a high player turn over and that comes with its own problems.

It’s not as big as that gap, the last two two seasons promotions and relegations have shown us that.

Birmingham will recruit but they have the basis of their Championship squad already. Hence why they spent what they did last summer.

Quite. It feels like everyone's also forgotten that just twelve months ago, Ipswich went straight through the Championship for back-to-back promotions.

Now, I'm not saying that Birmingham will definitely do the same - but they got 13 more points this season than Ipswich did in 2022/23. A top half finish for them is certainly not out of the question next year. They will not be amongst the bookies' favourites for relegation.

This is pretty clearly just not true

Only once in the last 5 years has 2 of the teams promoted to the Championship gone straight back down

In 4 of the last 5 years there's been 2 (or more) of the newly promoted premier league teams that have gone straight back down, that includes the last 2 years where all 6 newly promoted teams have gone down

Just this year in the championship the only newly promoted team to get relegated only went down by three points, the three premier League relegated teams (who were all newly promoted) finished 15, 16 and 26 points from the team in 17th

No promoted team got relegated from the championship did they? Plymouth were on their second season, Luton had gone up over 5 years ago and Cardiff haven’t been in the 3rd tier for ages. Think it might be two seasons in a row that no team promoted from league one has gone down straight away, whereas the opposite is true from the prem, as you say with a huge gap to safety as well.

It’s a bit of an anomaly but the teams currently in 15th and 16th in the premier league are very likely to be the finalists for the Europa league, which puts the task in staying up in the premier league into perspective, just isn’t a weak team in the 17 teams who the promoted teams will have to compete against.

Nowhere near as big in my view.
Last season all 3 sides going up to the Premiership were relegated.
In the past TWO seasons all 3 clubs promoted to the Championship stayed up..
There is a huge gap between maybe the top few Championship clubsvand the rest, but lowly Oxford best Sheff U and Sunderlamd and were not alone.

I think there’s a big gap between the top teams and teams like Oxford. We’re one of the worst in the division at actual football and passing, but we found a way of getting enough points and of beating some big clubs when it mattered.

No idea how they compare statistically, but Sheffield Utd paid £6m for Burrows from Posh who was last year’s league one left back of the season. I can obviously see Burrows attacking numbers were frightening so that’ll be a mega differentiator.

Really looking forward to seeing him play for us if he doesn’t get pinched beforehand.

Currie only on the bench for the first leg of their first play-off game. Presumably on the strength of Wellens’ recent change in formation to three at the back.

On related matters, not sure why we don’t also have a Match thread running for the League One Play-Offs, given that they’re going to be similar to the Championship ones in determining our opponents next season.
