I see the Wally with the Brolly has quit the Jamaica job overnight.

On the one hand - yes, it was a massive faceplant to fail to win the group ahead of Curacao.

But on the other - it's not like the World Cup dream is over for them! They'll have to win two matches on neutral ground in March to qualify - one against Bolivia, Suriname or New Caledonia, and the other against DRC or Iraq. It's not exactly an impossible task!

Feels like giving up on a job have done........

The first World Cup I saw was Argentina ‘78 where just 16 nations qualified. Scotland were one of those.

Brown and Spencer’s Norn Ireland get the hardest possible draw away to Italy, if they win that they might have a short trip to Wales if Mark Harris Wales can beat Bosnia in the semi.

Looking at the rest, decent enough draw for the Republic, while fancy Sweden to make a bit of a mockery of coming bottom of their group and winning their semi against Ukraine in Poland before playing either Albania or Poland at home.

I think away to Turkey might be just as hard - they've been playing some good football in the qualifiers (other than one obliteration by Spain), and have an infamously challenging atmosphere.

Plus, I don't think this Italian team is in any way scary. Northern Ireland probably don't have a chance against them in Rome, but if they have all their key players fit and they play like they did this week, then Wales will have a shot at beating them at home in March. Would be hilarious if Italy missed three World Cups in a row!

Not FIFA's worst idea, to be fair.

Avoids situations like 2018, when the three best sides (France, Brazil & Belgium) all ended up in the same half of the draw after winning their groups, and the final was a bit one-sided as a result.

There's a fair bit of variance in that draw for England!
Could end up with a group of Iran-Panama-New Zealand, and you're laughing. Or you could get Uruguay-Norway-Ghana, and you're in for a helluva scrap.

Pot 3 is basically just avoid Norway. Considering 3 go through in 8 of the 12 groups then the potential of a group of death is about 1 in 12.
Chance of Italy in pot 4 if they qualify, they really have fallen since winning it, yet managed to win a euros in that time.

You also (I presume) couldn't get Norway and Italy in the same group - if you're England, at least - because I don't reckon they'll allow more than two European teams in any group (or more than one team from any other confederation).

Yeah only two European teams per group, so if England get Scotland then that is actually a touch.

The intercontinental play offs make it a bit complicated as only one team per confederation outside of Europe, meaning those two play off paths can only be in with certain combinations, with one guaranteed to be in a group with two European teams and an African one, which if they ended up with Spain, Senegal and Norway would let them book the flights home on December 5th.
