There does need to be some mechanism to hold polticians accountable for their actions.
Ahead of the 2010 general election, Cameron pledged that a Conservative government would reduce annual net migration from the “hundreds of thousands” to the “tens of thousands.
And yet, here were the figures under Cameron:
| Year | UK net migration |
|---|
| 2010 | 256,000 |
| 2011 | 205,000 |
| 2012 | 177,000 |
| 2013 | 209,000 |
| 2014 | 318,000 |
| 2015 | 332,000 |
How can you get away with lying to your people so badly on a key policy issue? One that helped you get elected.
Then you have Boris Johnson, the king of the liars: He said: “I can make sure that numbers will come down because we’ll be able to control the system in that way.”
How did Boris do?
| Year | UK net migration |
|---|
| 2019 | ~271,000 |
| 2020 | ~34,000 |
| 2021 | roughly 200,000–250,000 depending on the ONS series/method used |
| 2022 | ~606,000 |
Boris also broke *his own* covid rules when he was prime minister.
If I was PM, I honestly wouldn't be able to live with myself with these illegal crossings. If someone got killed by an illegal entrant, I would view that death as my fault. I'd declare a national state of emergency and I'd be working day and night to stop it happening. I'd see that as my responsibility to the people who entrusted me with stewardship of the country.
It genuinely irks me beyond belief, that after his wretched lies and behaviour, Boris gets to go swanning around the world promoting his book. After going to an illegal war with Iraq, Blair gets to earn millions on the after-dinner-speaking circuit.
I feel like politicians think they're untouchable and can just go around making promises they get elected on and breaking them.
In other professions gross negligence can land you in prison, why not politicians?
If prison is too unrealistic, can we at least create a system where if they are found to have broken X number of manifesto promises they are banned from any further public office?
