So, a Liverpool under 23 team are set to take the field at Villa tonight with the home team huge favourites to go through. If we would've drawn Liverpool we would gave a very real chance to proceed to the next round. Surely it cant be fair to field a youth team in a major competition

Well that is down to the competition organisers not Liverpool.

Yes it is.
They could have sent the kids to whatever cash inspired kickabout they are playing in.

Whilst you might see the League Cup as more important, prestige wise and cash wise (as we have found with prize money) PL clubs will favour the Club World Cup which they have qualified for via winning the Champions Lg. Liverpool aren't to blame, others are.

Iirc, the Premier League refused to move fixtures to accommodate the situation but could be wrong. So fixture planners are to blame.

Its Liverpool.... its not their fault.
They`ll pay the fine from whatever obscene amount of money they make from whatever match the first team are playing in.
Red filth.
Cost us our place in Europe........

so did Spurs fans along with Leeds and all the other fans that caused trouble abroad in the 80’s.

On June 2, 1985, the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) banned English football clubs from competing in Europe.
All English clubs were banned for five years.
Liverpool’s ban, at first indefinite, was eventually set at 10 years and then later reduced to six.
The ban followed the death of 39 Italian and Belgian football fans at Brussels’ Heysel Stadium at that year’s European Cup final.

Wasn`t aware Spurs & Leeds were playing at Heysel?

It was Liverpool.

Without wishing to start this all again, Hysel was the final straw, the attitude of fans in the years leading up to that day had a bearing on it as well. The situation just wasn't that black and white.

It’s rather sad that Liverpool value some nonsense, barely competitive two match ‘tournament’ in morally dubious Qatar over the League Cup, but there we are ...

Can anyone recall any winners and the year they won from the club tournament thing? Don’t think I’ve ever watched a minute from it.

If we were drawn against Liverpool I would hope that we would remind them about their murdering antics that cost us our place in Europe.

I can remember a time where there were no substitutes (pre 66/67) when , for example, teams would play 3 games over the Easter weekend , game on good friday, game on easter saturday and a game on easter monday

.... the highly/ overpaid PL first team squad players are supposed to be creme de la creme professionals, most PL sides currently have enough first team squad players to put out 3 teams, yet Klopp opted to play kids?

However, with the league cup competition having no prize money until the semi finals, maybe Klopp decided to prioritize the games that keep the Anfield coffers overflowing with filthy lucre?

But then the physicality of the game has changed. An English top flight footballer in 1976 covered on average 8-11km per game, 25% walking and 10% sprinting. In the 90s that was 12-16km with less walking and more sprinting. Those figures are only going one way. In the recent womens world cup they were outperforming the 70's men for distance and sprint %. They are performing at peaks where recovery time is longer.
