General Hot weather

This is a really good discussion, polite and well informed, I've learned some stuff!

Then they’d be replaced the next day by someone with less integrity , or as is happening, someone in India . But more than that huge swathes of jobs are going to AI. It’s absolutely shocking, scary, and I worry what jobs will be left to the next generation. Currently about 40% of roles will be removed in the next 2 years.
AI is definitely a threat and a worry but I think that figure will always be 'two years away' - like self-driving cars.

Which is ironic given that AI currently mahooooooossively underprices its energy costs:

Then we will need less people so can reduce the birth rate and immigration. Win Win. I suspect we will see a UBI introduced at that point but it gives us an excellent opportunity to uncrowd this island

Incorrect unfortunately, currently happening in earnest with massive layoffs that haven’t been reported in depth to the media.

Process ongoing and completed within two years including all MOC but most within the next 6 months

Two years ago your assessment would have been fairer. But ai built 18 months ago is already redundant as it’s all progressed so unbelievably quickly. Brace yourself. The next Industrial Revolution is smashing through the front door as we speak

That two years had just become three months. 😳

I know they exist. But I'll bet you three pounds that in two years the majority of taxis in Oxford won't be driverless.

You're probably right that I'm two years behind and obviously AI will take over a lot of current jobs. But where I work has seen such an explosion in jobs like project manager and business development manager in recent years, I bet they'll come up with lots of new jobs involving the management of AI.

I've got one - don't bother if it's much more expensive.

If you get a portable, it's likely to have a single pipe system, which means the unit is sucking air out of the room (instead of the outdoors) to create the colder air. It then pumps that used air out of the pipe and outside. What that means is you end up creating a low pressure environment in your room, which ends up sucking in hot air from outside. So although you'll be cooler - you're ultimately just sucking more hot air into the house.

We've noticed this - when the unit is on upstairs, our downstairs gets much warmer.

So, the strongest portable unit might actually be worse for your home!! Be careful.
You have opened a can of worms in my brain!

Been researching this and you can make a really simple modification to get air into the unit from outside rather than inside. I have spend about £20 on another pipe, a duct flange and some tape!

I will hopefully make this 1 pipe unit into a 2 pipe version!

If you really want to go into it, r/DIYUK on reddit is full of air con posts.

Excellent. I look forward to self-driving vehicles being the norm. It is technology that now seems less of a pipe dream.

Yeah man, forget the thousands of jobs that could be lost! We don't need 'em!

I look forward to the neo-Luddites smashing up Waymos and then going off to live like the Amish where no modern technology beyond 2024 is allowed.

AVs don't drink and drive, don't text at the wheel, don't get distracted or tired or deliberately speed. It's a safety revolution and if it gets most BMW drivers off the road, let's get it done.

That's the ideal scenario of course, but the reality would be getting in your car for work and it wanting to do a half hour update before moving if running on Microsoft software, only being compatible with 5% of the roads and needing to be replaced completely every 3 years if using Apple software, or being really secure but having you enter command strings into a text terminal to turn on the wipers if Linux-based.

Nerd banter.

With a massive spike in air conditioning unit sales & orders.................... will that not just increase energy consumption leading to bigger bills and more warming? :) 🤷‍♂️
In the main yes,yes and yes .
Same as during a really cold winter .

Don’t they rely on clear road markings and signage and up to date GPS speed limit data ?

Self driving vehicles work well in places like America where it is mostly straight lines and blocks............... central London, like most cities that have evolved over millenia isn`t anywhere near ideal..... some places you struggle for a phone signal thanks to big buildings etc.
