Booked in this week to WfH on a course months ago, heatwave comes just as it starts and now ina room with a fan and no air-con vs the bliss of aircon at work.

On top of this, I live with my mother in law and she decided she had to iron her clothes this morning, in the front room, at 0900 once the house had already warmed.

Anyone else having a great time?

Was speaking with my partner who was born in Australia and moved to England at a fairly young age (English mother).

She gets infuriated at the amount of things people in this country do that are counter-productive to keeping them cool. Leaving windows open when it's baking hot outside, not drawing curtains/pulling blinds, no suncream, turning on the oven in hot weather etc.

Someone ironing is up there with one of the most mind-boggling choices you could make in this weather.

Im following her round the house at times, closing doors, blinds, and windows. She's nearly 80 and just does things like she use to. Trying to explain that a breeze in her window coming from 35° outside dosent actually cool the house is a waste of breath.

This wasn't meant to be a moaning about family thread.

So far an improvised standing desk, and web cam off, is allowing for a semi reasonable work place this week.

What I don't get though, is why some people choose not to believe it. Like...why not accept the tangible facts? What is there to gain from denying it? Is it just a way of appeasing guilt for their contribution to it? Just really odd.

Because they listen to populist politicians and commentators who just happen to receive money from the fossil fuel industry.

Really I think a lot of the funding and impetus behind the likes of Trump and Farage is from the fossil fuel industry - all the 'anti woke' stuff too. If progressive causes in general can be discredited people will be less likely to believe in climate change and their industries will go on being hugely profitable for a bit longer.

Anyway my little rechargeable fan from John Lewis is pretty effective, I bet they've sold out!

Ask her how bloody freezing an Aussie house is when the outside temperature gets down to 15 degC though! Most Aussie houses don’t have good insulation for either end of the temperature spectrum.

Interesting - so *some* from the emitted heat from the server farm, but quite a lot from the heat from the generation of the electricity used to power it! (As you can tell, no AI was used in the generation of this reply!)

So you've stripped off to keep cool and therefore turned the webcam off. Whilst also following your 80 year old mother-in-law around the house.

I wasn't recommending this approach... but she has now left the house for the garden centre so results speak for themselves.

The amount of heat created only has a significant effect on a global scale because of the amount of water required for cooling. Water and electricity demands are the risk areas.
It is why there is investment in development of datacentres that can operate in the oceans, and in space.
