Reading on another site how Sunderland are skint.
If they were to get relegated this season(a distinct possibility) they will obviously still be on parachute payments in League 1.
This is how the current deal works out for Sunderland.

"Over three years, Sunderland will get 55 per cent of the £99.9million they made from TV revenue in the first year, 45 per cent the following year and 20 per cent in the third year"

So they will get around £45 Million in TV money,+ all other income next season.

SKY, rewarding failure for years to come.

I’m guessing their higher earning players will be on get out clauses if they go down as well. Seems to me the best thing that could happen to them is to go down. Their fan base is so huge they would still have big crowds and would eventually be able to “buy” their way back up the leagues. Agree totally on the Sky comment.
