Current Player Thread Greg Leigh

I don't mind Leigh and the treatment of him has been shoddy at best given what he's done. I'm not sure I buy he will immediately look better in League One though. He was always a bit of a weak leak defensively even the season we got promoted, and we required immediate improvement on him in the shape of Joe Bennett who came in and was a much better fit for us, and a much better player at that.

In a team that struggles for goals, Leigh is an absolute must. Important goals too, he's a huge threat aerially. Criminally cast aside last season. It was disappointing that Rowett or Bloomfield didn't back themselves to get more out of the likes of Leigh and Dembele.

To bomb Leigh out after his goal-scoring record in the previous Championship season was madness. To bomb him out, recruit Roosken and then decide Roosken wasn't up to it, was just nuts!! Yes, he has limitations at the back, but he had a goal in him and was a constant threat when the ball came into the box.

Greg Leigh will be fine for a team that's only aiming to finish above 21st, and he's also a pleasure to watch.

Who else do we have to replace his swagger?! 🤯

League 1 is his game and I’m excited to see him play again.
Indeed. I just hope he doesn't feel any regret at the way he was treated last season. He's a professional who has been in the game long enough to have a thick skin but players are only human. He'll certainly continue to be a fan favourite, whatever happens.

I'm sure he'd just write a beautiful ballad by way of catharsis.

I think the staggering thing with Greg Leigh, when thinking about his exclusion, is that he scores goals. A precious commodity that didn't come easily to us in the Championship. He had the knack that none of our wingers did, nor our other defenders last season, and was the epitome of a 'when all else has failed' player. He's also a character and better in the air for when it's backs to the wall.

To put him behind Currie in the ranks is understandable, he's the better footballer, but to push him aside like he had absolutely nothing to offer (and actually PAY for Roosken instead) can take its rightful place in our Argos catalogue of last season's f*ck-ups.

Greg Leigh will be an asst for us in L1

As you suggest, he is a professional and with a new coaching team, I can't see why he shouldn't be keen to play.

I am sure him and Helik weren't sorry to see Bloomfield go.

He was also a far better defender than Roosken.

If Greg Leigh returns to the side I hope he is given a huge reception with his name sang loud and proud… Scandalous what happened ~ what a way to treat the previous season’s joint top goal scorer.. he had also been nothing but a positive influence on players and fans alike as far as I can tell.

Does anyone know what the latest is with Greg? Ramsey mentioned a positive chat with him, but I just wondered if we know how close he is to match fitness etc.
I assumed it was simply a case of preferring Kioso and Helik as the two defenders on the bench. With only 7 subs allowed it limits the options.

He wasn’t able to play but has been superb in training and Ramsey said he was a class act (or words to that effect).

As I said in this thread, he should never have been bombed out. Fair play to him, he’s been a consummate professional from what I can tell and I do wonder whether he’d have picked up a few goals for us in the Championship last season.

He’s a player I’d like us to keep hold of and others (naming no names) should look at when they go about their business.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: when you’re tired of Greg Leigh, you’re tired of life

I think this team lacks a couple of key traits which Leigh helps address. One is a bit if personality, and the other is physicality.

Really really important to have him around this year.
