Current Player Thread Greg Leigh

"Expensive" doing a lot of heavy lifting there in the context of the Championship if you don't mind me saying
Well, we spent our budget on the likes of Romeny, Rooskens, and Emakhu but rely on freebies like Stan. We could have spent that money on players who contributed.

As it is unlikely that we will see Gregly again this season, I would just like to say that whenever he has played for us, he has given everything for the badge. Scored a few goals too.
He may well be out of favour at the moment but he has, by and large been bloody decent for us. Seems like a real nice guy too.
If he is moved on in the summer, he would be an asset wherever he goes.
One of the good guys and I wish him well.

Well said. I know football doesn't work like this but it would be good to give him a send off somehow and show our appreciation. I've loved watching him play football for us - a player who wears his heart on his sleeve and jumps like a salmon.

Considering we seem to have reverted to long-ball-and-hope, it bends my head that we shut Greg out for a player we don’t even use?!

What a mess so much of our recruitment is, and what a rubbish way to treat a good guy who gave his all for the team and who’s goals were so important last season.

If* we get relegated, I wonder if we will try to keep Greg (especially if Currie gets sold). Although if I were Greg I'd be looking for an exit given the way he's been treated since January.

*I know, I know

Nuts the Leigh situation. We extended Harris's contract, I assume to have someone in place if the inevitable happened. Yet, Leigh, a decent L1 player, joint top scorer last season, and he's left to rot on the bench. Even more nuts when we end up signing Roosken, not playing him either and then popping Spencer on the left (who's done well).

Tbh, I wouldn't be interested in staying if I was Leigh, but you never know.

I think if you reversed your way through the season, Leigh would be just one talking point across a catalogue of “WTF”.

He was never good enough to play large parts in games but to freeze him out (wtf number one) for the unwanted luxury of Roosken (wtf number two) who turns out to be so crap that even when we lose Currie we put our best right back there instead (wtf number three) and to top it off, he finds himself behind Brown as worst case scenario left back (wtf number four).

By leaving Leigh out we ditched one of our few characters, someone who could get the fans going a bit and cost ourselves that option to throw him on at the back post for a few minutes when all else had failed. People may think that’s pointless but we do often get going in the last 5-10 mins, teams sat off us and he had the knack that our wide players don’t.

I don’t think we got a lot right this year at all. In fact, bar the acquisitions of BDK and Lankshear I’m really struggling. At least in BDK we got to watch a proper bona fide championship level footballer for a bit, and in Lankshear we can all have renewed faith in the loan system. But other than that it’s been a total dog’s dinner.

And he could score a goal ,I think we've missed that especially at home bring him with 20 mins to go ,has Currie scored a goal i dint get all the hype about him and like whats been mentioned before fancy extending Harris contract there have been some lazy decisions made or should I say bad decisions.

I hope Greg is going whether we be in League One or the Championship next season. We really need to set our sights higher than a middle of the road League One left back.

He'll leave us and end up at a club like Burton Albion, perfectly demonstrating the above point.

This is where I would be an awful manager and be ruled by heart and not head. I would offer Greg a five year contract and Matty Taylor would still be up front.

Interviewer: "Well you took the team down with a record low points total. What is your message to the supporters?"

Eric Blair: "Yes, our performances were not what we wanted, but on the positive side the team had by far the best teeth in the division, Premier League quality in fact, and the end of season party had the best Karaoke session you'd ever hope to hear"

I'll stand by that.

"And we have the best collection of beards in the EFL"

Bradshaw and Bennett coming back?
With Bradshaw you get the double whammy of great beard and great teeth.

Admittedly his teeth aren't quite as good as McEachran's and his beard isn't up to the standard of Bennett but what an allrounder Bradshaw is. Don't know what he's like at singing though.

I think Leigh is OOC this summer. I don't know if he was told in January that he should look to move on and decided against it, but along with Dembele they seem to have both disappeared.

Roosken was a signing for when Bloomfield thought he would play 3 at the back, which he swiftly ditched.

The Roosken deal is slightly strange in that he isn't a 'development' signing with his age and seemingly didn't have to be on the pitch long to turn the deal permanent.

Does the Roosken signing indicate that Bloomfield would perhaps prefer to play wingbacks, but has abandoned it after a couple of failed experiments early on with us? He may then return to it next season? No idea what his usual preferred formation is, but if we start next season in League One with wingbacks he'll be fighting even more of an uphill struggle to keep Oxford fans on side!

Why if we have the players to play that system and it works? I don't care what formation we play if we win.

We do tend to leave huge gaps for the other team to run into when we play 3 at the back, although it might have worked away at Coventry I think? Still makes us even less likely to score, which is not something we need to get worse at.

Yunus Konak says hello.
Fair enough, a good half season loan for sure and I like him a lot. But…

We’re led to believe he was wanted in the summer and Rowett said no. We instead kept trialist Allan Campbell hanging around (remember this? Good times) and in the end got neither, and nobody else. How did the club allow itself to end up with nobody for that squad place?

Konak made a good contribution, no doubt, and it’s not his fault, but even with that you look and have to point a “wtf” at the club.

You'd be as good a manager as anti
I do, it's s**t whenever we do it! Not sounder at the back and boring in attack.
That's because we play 3-4-3, not 3-5-2, which I think would give us better control of the midfield. Although we'd be relying on the wingbacks to cover a lot of ground up and down and to get quality crosses in for the two up top (which realistically would be one up top and a #10)

Whenever we’ve done it attacking mainly consists of full backs labouring up the wings. Very dull, though obviously other teams manage it.

We need to build for the future. Loved Gregly but he wouldn't be a good fit for us next season IMO along with quite a few others.
