Current Player Thread Greg Leigh

Currie is injured. That's it. We then chose to omit three left-sided defenders (with plenty of Championship experience between them) altogether.

Jack Currie is not injured.

Wasn't injured when we faced Hull and wasn't injured on Monday. He may not have trained lots as per Bloomfield's reasoning for leaving him out of the squad on Good Fridat but he is not injured.

I agree that the signing of Roosken, it was bad enough he was clearly not good enough as a 'loan' player, is honking but that decision to now activate his signing is a derelict of duty.

Why is he not playing then?

Agree re pairing of Helik and Davies, but if there is an issue at left back then you could go Makosso / Davies at centre back and Brown at left back. That might be tough on Helik but it’s an option..

I really think there has been some muddled thinking in the signing of Roosken (then not really playing him / immediately dropping him) and the non registering of Leigh..

Leigh coming off the bench for Spencer, allowing Placheta to be an option further forward could have worked yesterday..

No way can you leave Helik out he's been our best defender.

I've never got the 'Leigh is a bad defender' line. I don't think he's as good as Currie defensively, but that doesn't make him bad. I saw Brown get exposed filling in at left back more than Leigh and have never understood the idea that Brown is a better option at LB than Leigh.

Where Leigh is poor is when we're in possession. Put simply, he's not a very good footballer. The difference between him and Currie (and Roosken) in terms of getting the ball under control and progressing it quickly is night and day. But on the other hand, you don't need to be a brilliant technical footballer to be an effective footballer. I see Leigh as a modern day Sercombe. Sercombe wasn't the best on the ball, but he had a good engine, knew where he needed to be and could finish. That's similar to what Leigh offered offensively and I would've been happy to see him off the bench a few times since January to help sniff a goal out.

I don't think it's necessarily a Roosken vs Leigh thing. It's a Leigh vs Romeny/Dembele/Davies for the squad place. Definitely one we've messed up on somewhere.

Someone on here who was at the game Monday said he was going through a warm up/exercise routine Monday on the pitch though, which you wouldn't do with an ill player, they would be recuperating.
I don't know the ins and outs of what you would do from a sports science perspective. Maybe he was doing the warm up and still didn't feel right. Maybe there is another reason, no idea.

What would be the point of Roosken in the squad if we had Leigh and Currie?

Roosken has been a strange signing that hasn’t worked out (yet), only way to justify it would have been if he was offering more than Leigh had, those using Spencer at left back or Dembele in the squad are reaching for the cope, he was a direct replacement and he hasn’t been as good.

Does anyone know what the 'certain conditions ' are that need to be met to make this permanent?

I thought we had signed him? The loan was to get the deal over the line quicker? Could be wrong though.

If their were conditions and he has met them then it was a very, very low bar, basically get on the pitch as he has done nothing of note and barely featured.

When he signed there was something about conditions being met to make it permanent. I didn't know we had signed him permanently now..

I wouldn't take me saying it as gospel but I thought it was said on here it had been made permanent, similar to the Prelec deal. Which would be interesting as he also hardly features now, so both strange deals.

I thought I heard Bloomfield say after the Hull game that Currie will need an operation in the summer and that he needed to manage his availability carefully or I may have mis-heard that!

If he did say that, then I’d say he is injured or has a restriction to be available.

As I’ve said before, Roosken is indeed a strange signing.
I don't think he's improved the squad and wasn't featuring much for Huddersfield when we signed him. Maybe BDK recommended him as they were teammates at Heracles.
?

Jack had an individual warm up, prior to the squad coming out onto the pitch. Had lots of photos with fans at the front of the stand and chatted to folk.

He played okay away to Coventry, but have felt he looks inexperienced and lightweight, so not an enhancement now/when we needed it, but having said that, I struggle with a lot of our signings in terms of what the recruitment team actually see/gauge their decision on!

But Bloomfield himself said in the post match interview after the Hull game that he has an ankle issue which will require surgery in the summer and that they have to manage him, as per above, so clearly something isn’t quite right.

Might be similar to Vaulks the other season where we hear after the final game that he’d been playing through the pain barrier and needed an operation in the summer so that he could be back in time for the new season kick off, but then I vaguely remember he had a set back meaning he wasn’t ready!! Who knows.

We announced the Prelec deal, could be wrong but we haven't announced Rooskens have we?

It was Jerome on The Dub who said that he was under the impression that the necessary trigger(s) to make Roosken's deal permanent had been met.

Which indicates that said trigger was something along the lines of "start a match" and therefore the deal was done as a loan on deadline day to ensure it was complete and enabling us to focus on other things.

Roosken himself said something like "it won't take much for me to be here next season"

Does that though mean we now have the option or that it is now an obligation?

The wording of the club on his signing was "The agreement includes an option to buy, which will become an obligation should certain conditions be met."

Jerome's wording made it sound like the certain conditions had been met, and therefore it is now an obligation.

There couldn't have been many 'certain conditions' then. A very odd signing IMHO and doesn't seem to have improved on what we've already got here. I remain to be convinced but hope he does turn out to be a good signing. 🤔

It's deeply frustrating how many expensive recent signings barely play, leaving the burden to be shared by a small group of stalwarts aided by a few willing bit-part players.

"Expensive" doing a lot of heavy lifting there in the context of the Championship if you don't mind me saying
