Ex-Player Thread George Baldock - RIP

So, so, so happy for the Greek lads last night. The score, and the nature of the win.

I was due to play in a charity match vs a Celebrity XI the week after my Dad unexpectedly passed away, and had considered not playing. In the end, I decided to go ahead with it, and miraculously scored the opening goal within the first 10 minutes. That moment, and those emotions, will forever stay with me. I'm sure the same will be true for those players last night.

RIP, George. A wonderful man taken too soon. As fans, he had a direct, positive impact on all of our lives and I thank him so much for that.

I hope his family and friends find some solace in the beauty and magnitude of remembrance.
 
The Dub brief special is a really nice piece. I’d totally forgotten that radio segment with the young lad George had given his shirt to. So wholesome!

It did remind me of our next trip to MK Dons after the promotion (it was a somewhat dreary 0-0 from memory, might be wrong) - and I vividly remember Baldock walking all the way right to the corner where the Oxford fans were and applauding for quite a while. Not a token ex-player clap, like walked all the way over and participated in a genuine exchange of respect and admiration between player and supporters. A lovely moment.
 
I've read a lot of the media articles and I assume is "our" Colin B in the comments, I thought The Athletic one was amiss in not mentioning his time at Oxford.

Maybe it was cobbled together from an old article looking at all of Sheffield United's players who got promoted to the EPL, but as well as updating for Panathanaikos and Greece, they could have added his time with us and Northampton.

Which brings me back to those times under Michael Appleton. When we asked at a fans forum what Plan B was when we wouldn't be able to play nice football, we were told Plan A is plan B by Mark Ashton. After a heavy defeat to Cambridge away on tv, Appleton went for a clear out before assembling the side that would take us to promotion from L2 over the next two seasons. Notably in the second half of that first season, Roofe, Baldock, not sure who else. Then in the second season signing Roofe, Baldock back on loan, Ledson etc. Although MK would eventually recall Baldock, we were promoted without having to go through the play-offs.

and what a side we were, taking significant scalps from EPL teams and Championship teams in the Cups.

Yes, that was me Mark.

I was really disappointed that the writer (who I've conversed with before, and think is a very good guy, who takes the time to respond to comments) totally omitted George's time with us from the article. I felt the need to put the record straight, not from a point scoring perspective, but to make people aware of George, and his family's, ties to the club through the years.

I've noticed a few other publications and broadcasters only seem to mention Sheff Utd and MK Dons in relation to him, which I find gives an incomplete view of his life/career.

He was with us for ‘only a season’ and 40 odd games but with the blades and mk for about 7years a piece. Makes sense that they focus on those 2 clubs. I’ve hardly heard/read about Panathinaikos only as his current club. So three teams seems fair.

I couldn't spell it out any clearer in my post above, but you seem to have missed the point.

It was relating to George, and his family's, connection with our club over a much longer period than the seven years at Sheff Utd and MK Dons, something I felt deserved mentioning, and has been dismissed too easily by the media. He was one of us.

Indeed, and it's a connection that continues to this day thruogh his brother the doctor

I think the fact that he was with us ‘only for a season’ and 40 odd games, as you put it, is even more pertinent when you consider the huge affection he has from us fans.

He wasn’t just a loanee to us, he became an absolute legend on and off the pitch during his short spell

Tells you all you need to know about him as a top gent and it’s important his family and others feel that.

So frustrating. How hard is it to have a quick look at Wikipedia?

Even more annoying when the true story (that Wilder, whilst manager at Northampton, did his best to persuade Robinson to recall Baldock from his loan with us because of how good he was) is more compelling and in many ways adds another dimension to Wilder and Baldock's working relationship.

Such lazy journalism.
