Current Player Thread Gatlin O'Donkor

Well the Bible is indeed full of fantastical metaphors (many of which fly well over some of their readers' heads, missing the message entirely while arguing the tale as...well...gospel) but I think that one may be a stretch.
 
He has really looked the business this year so far, it's great to see. Whether he should be starting over Harris I don't know - his successes have come off the bench and he certainly seems to have a style that suits bullying tiring defenders. It's not like it's a competition for who's best anyway, it's a squad game nowadays and strikers are almost always going to get rotated regardless of the situation.
 
I would probably start with GoD on Saturday, but would understand if he comed off the bench after an hour.
As others gave said, he haa done very well coming off against tiring defences.
We are unlikely to have much possession Saturday ( Plymouth had 33% midweek and it is Russell Martin), and whether GoD cam make such an impact starting will be interesting

I think it's whether a question of whether by starting him he'd be bullying defenders anyway. I think in the past couple of weeks I've still been in the Harris starting camp, but from what I've seen in the past few games, Donks offers that physical presence with a willingness to run in behind along with the goal threat. He just seems to make more happen when he's leading the line, whereas Harris has looked better when playing slightly off the main striker.

After two goals in two games I'd advocate a start, but at the same time you'd also think Harris's counter pressing is exactly what we need against a Leicester that will try to play it about at the back. So maybe I wouldn't start Donks on Saturday, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him starting soon

Yeah, it may be for the the time being that GoD is better against tiring defenders. We need players who can come on and make a difference too. Having said all of that, if I was GoD, I would be banging down the managers door to start.
 
If we're looking to start Brown and Helik at CB (and even with their kicking ability Cumming or Eastwood) Gatlin is a must for me as someone who can actually pressurise from longer clearances.

Even if he's not winning in the first phase, you'd hope he'd give us more chance on the second ball. Just feel Harris can't really do that at all. I don't mind Harris getting a chance more in the 10 role at some point, but for me I just don't see him as a focal point.

Really does surprise me he got 15+ goals a couple of years back, definitely feels an anomaly given his record before and since.
 
I think Gatlin is a potential Thomas-Asante.

He’s got a fair bit to learn and getting better all the time. He gets in to defenders, and has composure and doesn’t panic in front of goal. He took his goal really well yesterday, but more than that. He is actually starting to have a BIG impact when called upon. That can only be a good thing has the season goes on.

I can see him hitting double figures this season.
 
I think Gats has to start now. His numbers are insane with 3 goals and assist and a winning penalty in the equivalent of 1.5 games of football. These stats dont capture the overall game contributions e.g. his runs that created space for Dems goal yesterday and the 4th vs Leicester. They also dont capture how good his hold up play is (stronger than Lanks who is now a 10mill+ player), he wins and controls most punts up field and has the strength to keep defenders at bay and generally shows good decision making when on the ball. It is no coincidence that we have scored eight of our 12 goals when he has been on the pitch. And he was doing all this in pre-season too.

With all the excitement of Missanga I think Gat's form has gone under the radar. I also think we are underestimating him because of his history for us.
If he was a new signing with these numbers and performances we would all be crying out for him to start.

This is all correct.

But someone will be along shortly to tell you that O'Donkor is only capable of all of this because, apparently, Mark Harris has completely exhausted the opposition defence for 70 minutes.

I remember Moody coming off the bench against Burnley with 20 minutes to go and scoring a hat trick.

Nothing wrong with a supersub.

Bringing him on late is working so far. I can see AR possibly trying him from the start during October when we 7 games in a month (one is an EFL Trophy).
 
I don’t think anyone can claim to have seen this coming from O’Donkor. Let’s be honest, if not for a transfer embargo he’s out at Solihull or somewhere on a season long loan and not one fan batting an eyelid or questioning a decision like that. What it does reaffirm though is that there’s very often a lot of truth in luck, timing and circumstances playing a huge role in the career of a lot of footballers. Fair play to him though he’s seized on this chance and very likely carved himself a future here in just a handful of games under new management. The flip side could very easily have been a drifting career and one that ends up at Oxford City in a year or so.
 
I think against teams that sit back Gats is the more effective option, since is less likely to get bullied and can bring others into play. Against teams that like to have the ball I would play Harris since he can press and counter more effectively. Either way i would be starting Gats against Cambridge.
 
I think if we are all honest, no one saw this coming - as with Dembele and Missanga - its just a new thing we have got going on with Ramsey and coaching team, and belief is running through the playing staff.
Superb contribution so far.
 
He deserves a start over MH now not October.

If we'd signed him from.a PL side on loan he'd be starting

Him ,TG or SM and MM starting yesterday please
