Great defender. Not the tallest, think he was under 6’, but a brilliant reader of the game. He was probably better than Bobby Moore but two very similar players in the way they defended.

What an icon. I only caught the tail-end to his club career (he had already retired from international football a few years previously), but what a solid defender he was in that absolutely formidable Milan side.

I can't argue with that but - whilst they were good looking fellas - they couldn't do Christmas like this man

The Italian defense, which Baresi led, was not half bad itself.

Conceded one goal in their six meaningful matches in the 1990 World Cup. Then in 1994, he tore the meniscus in his knee in their second group game, had knee surgery and then was still back for the final three weeks later where he kept Romario (who won the tournament's golden ball) in his pocket for 120 minutes. Shame about the penalty though.......
