Wembly !986. A day to remember

For me Wembley against York. A game that literally saved the club and it was incredible.
The only down side was getting home to the then girlfriend who had a go at me for being s**t faced. She never did understand what it was like being a football fan!

Don’t think we were still singing “6 in a row! 6 in a row, just like your fingers, 6 in a row” as that’s the hardest I’ve laughed at a football game, but it was still one of my favourite moments.

I wasn’t aware the club was at risk of death if we hadn’t gone up? How was that so?

It was s**t or bust that season. If we hadn’t gone up then the club would have been financially done. @RyanioBirdio was with the club at that time and can speak with my detail.
There was a reason why Rosie was in tears at the end and it wasn’t just to do with us being back in the football league.

I guess that’s one of the reasons why I don’t mind a few seasons watching us battle relegation in the championship given what could have been.

To be fair, it’s been fun. I remember Arsenal away in the FA cup when we had a goal ruled out for offside.

Singing “Ramoz Diaz yellow army” turning into “keeping warm yellow army” away at Shrewsbury (bonus points for abusing Joe Hart for 45 minutes).

Forest Green Rovers away and witnessing Kemar Roofe on loan, and hoping we would sign him (we did, appaz he did quite well).

Hereford away (you’re just a s**t town in Wales) and then driving 10 miles home to also not Wales but still England.

Being a mascot and nutmegging Phil Gilchrist in the warm up at the Kas Stad as a 15 year old (back when we were so tinpot that mascots had a kick about with the first 11 before the game).

I do love this club

16 March 2019 - OUFC v Bradford

Agree about this, for sheer drama. Bradford missed an absolute sitter minutes before - their player slid in at the back post, and it somehow went wide.

Although only March, I seem to remember we would have been in severe trouble if we had lost that game.

One of my favourite games: Swansea last game of the season 3-3 our players just didn’t give up our fans were amazing

Sunderland last home game atmosphere was amazing

But I probably think Portsmouth 1-4 Oxford that was a great day in the sun and Oxford were back finally

The club would’ve basically folded if we’d lost to York. Maybe not overnight, but in real terms it was over. A lot of staff had been told they’d need to be let go (me included) and the players were very aware that they’d be allowed / encouraged to leave. We might not have gone bust overnight, but in real terms we would’ve been in a race to the bottom while operating as a part-time outfit. It wouldn’t have lasted long, maybe another season, but after that we were Bury before Bury.

As has been stated, there’s a reason people like Rosie and Jerome were blubbing on the air after the final whistle. It wasn’t merely the relief of being back in the Football League - they knew the club had just been pulled out of a burning building seconds before it collapsed. I was in the press box that day, and although my initial reaction was to grab the person next to me in jubilation and squeeze them half to death when Potter wrapped it up, it didn’t take long for me to burst into tears.

It was one of the worst days of my life, yet many consider it to be one of the best of theirs.

Leyton Orient Away the post Manning game, atmosphere was superb and the game was a 3-2 nail biter in the end

Swindon away. 2-1 win Sercombe and Hall with a cracker. Then at the end their keeper getting sent off.
Loved it when a couple of their inbreds ran on to the pitch and ran towards over 2,000 Oxford, as they got closer they got slower and slower, enabling the stewards plenty of time to grab them.

That was amusing as they tried to take them out walking across the Stratton Bank. It was a mistake as they got constantly pelted by bits of burger, Cups etc on the walk across and they had to turn back.

Great selection. Notts County was my favourite game of the promotion season - something like 40 shots on goal in the match, wasn't it? And the Portsmouth 4-1 was something else - to thrash them in front of a big crowd in the August sunshine, after our years in the wilderness, was marvellous.

I'd add Swindon 1 Oxford 2 (2011). First win at the skip in my lifetime and the start of the period of dominance.

What a beautifully shocking corner that was too! All he needed to do was drop it on Clarkies head like the first half!

The best home matches have been covered, but for away games and honourable mention goes to Doncaster 0-1 OUFC in April 2018.

It wasn't a great game at all, but it's one of my favourites for its importance. We were right in a relegation battle at this point and I think results weren't great for us at the time - we really needed a win to avoid some huge nerves in our final home game versus Rochdale. Up steps James Henry with a fantastic diving header and all of a sudden we're looking like we'll be safe. A huge moment of significance on our road to where we are now.

It seemed like Henry was on a mission to keep us up by himself in that run-in. Such a shame he didn't get a promotion with us as a reward for his contribution.

James Henry did get a promotion with us last season. His last appearance was on the 19th April when he came on vs Stevenage at home. His final goal was away at Burton on the 6th April:

I realised after I posted I had written nonsense. What I actually mean is, it's a shame he didn't win a promotion with a more meaningful contribution when he was the heartbeat of our team. He didn't play any part in the play-offs and it was obvious he'd move on - I'd have loved to have seen peak Henry play for us in the Championship.

Remember walking to my seat and the atmosphere being utterly electric, even in the SSL. The game itself was something else.

Asa was player manager (so say ) at Tiverton Town:
"Hall signed for Tiverton Town in June 2024. He briefly took on the role of interim manager alongside fellow Tiverton Town player Niall Thompson after the sacking of Leigh Robinson and Ben Gerring. Hall would later take his player-manager role back until the end of the 2024–25 season following the departure of Rob Dray".

Not sure it’s been mentioned, but Hillsborough in 2021, James Henry with the late winner.

One of the first away games post-COVID, and the significance of that can’t be overstated. To have that moment, after a year of watching empty stadiums alone at home on our tellies, when we didn’t know if football was ever going to be the same again, at a stadium like that, to be part of that mass sense of joy again for the first time in nearly 18 months, was genuinely incredible. I was nearly in tears leaving the ground. A special, special day and one that, though it didn’t ultimately mean anything in terms of promotions or historic derby wins, will always be one of my favourite OUFC moments.
