Memory Lane Favourite away grounds (including ex-Grounds)

The first biggest away stadium i visited as a 10 year old was Tottenham away in the cup when we lost 4-2. Was really impressed with the stadium but probably more impressed seeing 5,000 Oxford fans there!

I always liked Forest too, visiting twice in the 90s.

Not a good stadium, but I'm giving Cambridge a shout when Mike Ford scored both in a 2-2 draw! 😎
I was there that day, and enjoyed the game. Interesting all the comments after the game pinpointed Gascoignes geniuses two goals but nothing mentioned about the two goals scored by Martin Foyle after a long injury lay off

Craven Cottage - enjoyed having a pint while looking over the Thames.

St. Albans- mentioned earlier on

The Dell - my first ever game. My father's family were from Southampton.

The dive by Nayim right in front of us is a strong memory from that day. Cheating a*****e.

I have a soft spot for these grounds
Aldershot, Southend, Luton - great atmosphere with barrel shaped roof over the stand.
Grounds with traditional terracing rather than "rail standing": Carlisle, Kettering, Accrington, Hayes and Yeading, Accrington.
Modern terracing like Burton, Morecambe
Quirky grounds like St Albans with a tree in the terrace?, Histon which when I first went, had a drop down fence panel along one side for a kebab van to pull up, Lewes and the Dripping Pan. Palm trees at Eastbourne.
Home fans' traditions: the air raid siren at AFC Sudbury, the guys with the bell at Grays, changing ends at half time at Tonbridge Angels.
Grounds with a view: Merthyr Tydfil looking over the valley, Northwich Victoria with the industrial plant looming over it, Tamworth and the ski centre, Dumbarton with only one stand , one of the Scottish pre-seasons with a huge crane over the Clyde.
Great food : Kidderminster obviously , Burton for faggots and gravy and mushy peas, Sunderland parmo, Woking amazing baps.
You know Sharon Woking too then?

My first away game was at that place down the A420. We lost 3-0 as per. 11-year-old me was slightly shocked that on the train from Didcot all the windows were put through and most of the fixtures and fittings were, erm, displaced. The train journey home was equally interesting, albeit there was nothing left to damage.
Does anybody remember the train to Reading back in the day? We had one game there when on the way back a couple of blokes had been on the beer and gear. One went out the window and I assume on top of the train and his mate went up there to get him down.

I have watched Oxford on about 140 grounds so a tough one to make a choice

Villa Park was always good and for the way the noise stayed in the stand I actually liked Nene Park (Rushton & Diamonds)

Despite watching us lose 6-0 and 4-0 Anfield was pretty special though

Favourite would be hard. But: Carlisle, Aldershot, Notts County, Charlton, Millwall, Southend and Burnley all have a certain charm. Probably forgetting a few.

Worst is 100% Gillingham. s**t town. s**t away end. Boring games every time. Ainsworth suits that club so well.

QPRs away end is naff and expensive for some reason it's somehow a bad away day.

Who do you support if you saw a game at Fulham?
We played there a few times in the 80s, last meetings were in the League Cup, think that would have been 89 or 90.

I believe it was Fulham who ended our long unbeaten home run in the League Cup, think we went 20 or so games unbeaten through the 80s.

Fulham away is an over 50s OUFC fan thing, those of under that consider them a myth.

Oxford United

But lived for 20 years in Putney and when not struggling down the M40 for home games, I would sometimes walk over Putney Bridge to watch Fulham v whoever.

I often pop back there to see my friend. Planning a trip to Wimbledon common soon.
Fulham football ground is just 1/4 mile away and a great sight on the horizon…shame my friend doesn’t like football.

I was only making a joke at the length of time since we played them, I get that we won’t be playing Liverpool etc very often but we have played the likes of Newcastle, Arsenal, Man City in the time since we played Fulham, you would think we would have drawn them in a cup at least by now. Nice place Putney, can’t blame you for taking advantage of the chance to watch a game when Oxford are not playing.

1. Goodison Park
2. Boleyn Ground
3. Elland Road

Fortunately done all Oxford games at these bar 2 at Leeds. Very nostalgic, happy memories.

I remember going to West Ham v Oxford Utd in our first season in Division One. Lousy view from the away end, but the atmosphere absolutely crackled. Quite intimidating.

West Ham leaving Upton Park for The London Stadium was a tragedy.

That stadium was utterly fantastic.
Yes, many years since I went to an away game (I'm in NZ now) but I did love Upton Park (used to follow West Ham when I was a kid, before moving to Oxon). Also had a soft spot for Plymouth, which I thought was quite a nice ground. But I'm quite fond of any ground where I've seen us win!

Was lucky enough to spend some time at the new Riverside stand at Fulham, well on the way to being the best away ground that. Shame we've not played there since the Soviet Union collapsed.

It is an extraordinary facility. Not going to help with your prawn sarnie reputation though :ROFLMAO:

West Ham (night game in the cup 2010ish) was an awesome away day for Oxford, we took a good few there. Nearly took them to extra time but Noble scored from range IIRC. One of the best stadiums I've been to.

I have bad memories of Frank McAvennie for some reason. Dodgy penalty, I think...

Think it was Scott Parker with the late winner

Ibrox, 1000 Oxford there for a pre season game, great ground.

In England I do like trips to Millwall, Pompey, Newcastle and Sunderland to name a few
