Fan's View FAN’S VIEW: 24/25 – No.46: SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY AWAY

I have to confess that, sitting at home watching on the tele, Mrs L and self did sing "We're winning away . . etc" just the once and really only to give my brother and his partner a taste of our football madness. They both think we are mad but, respect the fact that we do go to games and to quite a few away.

Looking at the table, bizarrely we are only 12 points off West Brom in 7th place. That is only 4 wins, and you think of the games we have messed up, simply not turned up, or taken the opportunity (Bristol City H&A, Hull away, QPR home, Derby H&A)

After the ridiculously overcrowded Cross Country train from Reading to Birmingham for WBA away, this time I chose the London route with from Kings Cross with Hull trains and changing at Doncaster. Due to engineering work on the East Midlands line from St Pancras to Sheffield, this train was also extra busy but luckily the seats reservations were working.

An early morning email warned me of possible delays en-route to Waterloo so got to Kings Cross some 45 minutes early.

At Sheffield I went straight to the Kelham Island tavern before the game, and almost the whole of the back garden/patio was Oxford fans. Decent selection of ales, a proper pork pie, and was most surprised not to see Paul B make an appearance.

For the game, as said in fans view our main threat in the last few games seems to be the long throw into the box where some defenders come up to cause trouble. Seeing the starting line-up, 28-1 for Sam Long to score anytime was great value. I thought we played a good attacking game even allowing for the long throws.

I was disappointed they ran out of hot food at half time after queuing up for a good ten minutes. Seeing how they can put up all sorts of digital displays showing what's on the menu, it must be possible to somehow indicate when food is sold out before you get to the front of the queue.

Agree about the chants. What's wrong with the old "jingle bells" Oxford win away song? (Apart from it's not Christmas).

Post match back to the Sheffield Tap which is a great location for the station, though for some reason they wanted football colours covered up. No-one was looking like causing any trouble, and even met some Barnsley fans who'd beaten Bolton 4-1. Looking at the L1 table, all three of our play-off rivals from last season are looking mid-table:- Bolton, Peterborough, Barnsley.

Sunday I partly spent updating my "run-in" excel and whilst I don't think Luton and Cardiff will catch us, I think we should be safe if we pick up two points from the last four games.

I went up with my 6 year old and our 4 coach Crosscountry up was so crowded that he made himself a little den underneath the seats in the declassified first class.

We went round the Kelham Island Museum and then had a couple of pints and a pork bap from The Millowners Arms. Then sat outside The Fat Cat. Excellent beer in both.

Afterwards we took a crazy taxi drive back to the station and just made the train. Amazingly we had a table seat to ourselves in an almost empty carriage!
