Fan's View FAN’S VIEW: 24/25 – No.41: HULL AWAY

Another new ground for me, so booked the Tuesday and Wednesday off work.

I travelled there and back on the Hull Trains direct service from Kings Cross, so a nice easy journey with no overcrowding and the trains to/from London were open and not advance so a pleasant journey.

A week or two before I'd watched a documentary "The Architecture The Railways Built" featuring Hull Paragon station. (now Paragon Interchange as combines bus and train connections). I didn't find out why it was called Paragon rather than the normal place name / street name. More interesting was it was used as a connecting station for millions of emigrants from Europe to America via Hull and then Liverpool, with their own dedicated platform and waiting room, to avoid any infectious diseases getting into the local population. Apparently the waiting room is now listed, and converted to a bar but I didn't get there.

Pre-match we went to the Ebenezer Morley (sports bar) near our hotel, the Admiral of the Humber (Spoons), and then the Walton Street (not in Oxford) social club. Best pint probably a Theakstons mild ... I couldn't believe how busy the first one was at 5pm on a Wednesday with people who'd looked like they'd been there all afternoon. There were many cleared brownfield sites in Hull, and it struck me as a city that has lost most of its traditional workbase, but I guess shows how cheap it is there if this lifestyle is affordable.

As for the game, another well supported club, with what seemed like thousands of schoolkids all out on a Wednesday night. Must admit I got fed up with their constant banging of the hoarding on the back wall and wished they'd brought an actual drum.

The concourse catering also had a few "scran" options of loaded chicken fries / pulled pork. Makes a change from Pukka Pies and Rollover hot-dogs that most other clubs offer up to away fans.

Obviously a diasppointing result to go one up and then lose two-one. At least I had backed Helik to score at 18/1 anytime, which for a defender who scored seven last season is a great price. Funnily I'd tipped this to a mate but he only got 14/1. [into 12/1 for the Watford game]. Another thing that is annoying me is the "told you so" fans on X who could see all of this coming. "Why didn't we shut up shop like against Norwich once we had scored?" for example. This match is one of the few we have against a relegation rival, so I think it was fair to try and win the game, rather than defend and end up drawing or losing, but it wasn't to be.

After the match we went to the club shop to buy souvenir pin badges. They already had their end of season sale on, and we saw one home fan buying three jackets (£65 down to £10) and a gilet (£70 down to £15). Maybe they will be up on e-bay in the morning to fund a pint at the Ebenezer Morley.

Next morning I had a little more time at Paragon station. They've several information panels about the history of the station including the emigration platform

Walking around they had many WW1 memorial panels around the walls. Looking this up, there are 20 wooden panels with the names, ranks and regiments of 4531 men from the East Riding of Yorkshire who left through this station and never returned. I found a soldier with a shared surname on one of the panels, which is a fairly uncommon one in England. As a family we didn't have grandparents (or I think great-grandparents) with direct action, so I wonder who this was. Research: Private JH Gelder Born 1897 St Mark Street, Hull - died 3rd May 1917 aged 20. Commemorated at Arras war memorial in France.
