I got annoyed when he gave it back to their keeper. Contested dropped balls have been long gone and will never return. Health and safety. Our only, most promising attack was brought to a halt by the bloody sprinklers going off very early in the game.
I think it was Scarlett going on little run about 30 yards out after one or two passes around the half way line. Then the ref blew the whistle. Whilst I'm sure we had clear possession the ref restarted play by giving the Sunderland goalie that new style drop ball malarky.
I'm informed that if the ball was in the penalty area then it is given to the goalie but the play was stopped when the ball was outside the area so I feel the ref should have given us the benefit "free drop ball" thing.
Has the old fashioned contested drop ball disappeared for good?
Just a guess. Meant to use a question mark.Is that really the reason? Blimey. The contested drop ball is a lot safer than any sort of moving challenge. Well, unless you send this fella to contest it that is...

Good information, thanks for that.Just a guess. Meant to use a question mark.
Looked it up on Wikipedia (trustworthy??) - "Before 2019, any number of players from either side were allowed to contest a dropped ball. However, this rarely occurred, as many players sportingly elected to kick the ball out of play when an event requiring the stoppage of play – most often an injury – occurred." "The official justification given for this change was that "[t]he [previous] dropped ball procedure often leads to a 'manufactured' restart which is 'exploited' unfairly (e.g. kicking the ball out for a throw-in deep in the opponents' half) or an aggressive confrontation."
I thought it stopped long before 2019 and had forgotten that there was no limit to the number of players that could crowd round and try to win it. Did Briggsy go in for ours o if so I bet the opposition just let him have it? Can't remember that far back.
I seem to remember two person drop balls?Just a guess. Meant to use a question mark.

Kind of an unwritten law I think.I seem to remember two person drop balls?
I think this period before the international break is extremely challenging and will tell us much. Be interesting to see how Des approaches it.Good analysis Paul.
We went in the Fire Station pub or whatever it was called before the game. Bit expensive (overhearing locals) we found out walking back to the car after the game. No s**t Sherlock as I had bought 2 soft drinks and 2 pints before the game and it was £20. I don't do pubs much these days but expected up North to be cheaper. I felt as though I had my pants royally pulled down.
As for the game we didn't turn up and we were totally outplayed. Having said that the lack of wingers is alarming and with none reported as coming back until after the International break. Are we going to give young Marselino a chance ? With 3 matches in 7 days I don't think we can go with the same players time after time. If he is ever going to get minutes it is now.
A couple more steps to the Dun Cow would have done you the world of good! Although they only had two bar staff on so it wasn't easy to get hold of their reasonably priced local ales...Good analysis Paul.

I'm sure it would have been welcoming regardless of the result. We're generally a friendly bunch, unless maybe you walk into somewhere chavtastic by accident. Or happen to have a Tyneside accentIt was easy to feel disengaged from that game. A hundred miles from the pitch and absolutely nothing to get excited about in 90+ minutes.
We stayed overnight so at least had an evening out - a (brilliantly priced) Italian meal and a couple of pints. We, too, found the locals friendly and amenable…. we did wonder if that would have been different with another result though!
I think Saturday is massive; if we don’t win then it will be difficult to remain optimistic in the short term. The crowd is bound to be quieter and more nervous so an early goal is essential……
Fire Station is a relatively upmarket place (as far as Sunderland goes), but £20 for 2 pints and 2 soft drinks is a P**s take. I'd expect about £4.80 a pint of lager and £3 a pint of coke.I think this period before the international break is extremely challenging and will tell us much. You do seem to have been done on those prices. Chaplins was £8.40 for two pints and the Museum Vaults £10.40 for two and a half pints. Prices in Durham were under a fiver a pint.
