Fan's View FAN’S VIEW: 24/25 – No.15: SUNDERLAND AWAY

Good write up as usual Paul.

Have we been unlucky with injuries particularly to our wide players, or has the fabled recruitment taken one too many gambles?

I don’t know the answer or really have an opinion on that, but as each injury tots up and we become more and more one paced as a team, my concerns slowly increase, especially as we rely heavily on creating chances with pace on the break.

We need some fit pacy wingers/forwards fit and back in the squad smartish.

The next two home games feel important, a meagre return of points from these and Des will be under a bit of pressure.

Our only, most promising attack was brought to a halt by the bloody sprinklers going off very early in the game.
I think it was Scarlett going on little run about 30 yards out after one or two passes around the half way line. Then the ref blew the whistle. Whilst I'm sure we had clear possession the ref restarted play by giving the Sunderland goalie that new style drop ball malarky.
I'm informed that if the ball was in the penalty area then it is given to the goalie but the play was stopped when the ball was outside the area so I feel the ref should have given us the benefit "free drop ball" thing.
Has the old fashioned contested drop ball disappeared for good?

I got annoyed when he gave it back to their keeper. Contested dropped balls have been long gone and will never return. Health and safety.

It was easy to feel disengaged from that game. A hundred miles from the pitch and absolutely nothing to get excited about in 90+ minutes.
We stayed overnight so at least had an evening out - a (brilliantly priced) Italian meal and a couple of pints. We, too, found the locals friendly and amenable…. we did wonder if that would have been different with another result though!
I think Saturday is massive; if we don’t win then it will be difficult to remain optimistic in the short term. The crowd is bound to be quieter and more nervous so an early goal is essential……

Is that really the reason? Blimey. The contested drop ball is a lot safer than any sort of moving challenge. Well, unless you send this fella to contest it that is...

Just a guess. Meant to use a question mark.
Looked it up on Wikipedia (trustworthy??) - "Before 2019, any number of players from either side were allowed to contest a dropped ball. However, this rarely occurred, as many players sportingly elected to kick the ball out of play when an event requiring the stoppage of play – most often an injury – occurred." "The official justification given for this change was that "[t]he [previous] dropped ball procedure often leads to a 'manufactured' restart which is 'exploited' unfairly (e.g. kicking the ball out for a throw-in deep in the opponents' half) or an aggressive confrontation."

I thought it stopped long before 2019 and had forgotten that there was no limit to the number of players that could crowd round and try to win it. Did Briggsy go in for ours o if so I bet the opposition just let him have it? Can't remember that far back.

Good information, thanks for that.

From what I remember we would have sent Andy Thomas in to contest them, keeping the back 4 intact if it didn't go our way. I guess putting your defensive midfielder would have been standard.

I seem to remember two person drop balls?

Good analysis Paul.
We went in the Fire Station pub or whatever it was called before the game. Bit expensive (overhearing locals) we found out walking back to the car after the game. No s**t Sherlock as I had bought 2 soft drinks and 2 pints before the game and it was £20. I don't do pubs much these days but expected up North to be cheaper. I felt as though I had my pants royally pulled down.
As for the game we didn't turn up and we were totally outplayed. Having said that the lack of wingers is alarming and with none reported as coming back until after the International break. Are we going to give young Marselino a chance ? With 3 matches in 7 days I don't think we can go with the same players time after time. If he is ever going to get minutes it is now.

I think this period before the international break is extremely challenging and will tell us much. Be interesting to see how Des approaches it.
You do seem to have been done on those prices. Chaplins was £8.40 for two pints and the Museum Vaults £10.40 for two and a half pints. Prices in Durham were under a fiver a pint.

A couple more steps to the Dun Cow would have done you the world of good! Although they only had two bar staff on so it wasn't easy to get hold of their reasonably priced local ales...

I didn't question the prices but yeah we saw the Dun Cow. Just picked the wrong place to venture in. We walked around shops as some of my lot wanted a Greggs or something. Bloody hell how did Adam Johnson get done? Place full of absolute munters. Should call the place Munterland. Looked like the average age for belly button piercing is around 12 and pregnancy about 13. Really how do mums let their kids go around with camel toe on display? Actually I think that may have been one of the mums but I hope to God she was over 16 because some of this stuff you cannot unsee. Poor Adam never stood a chance. Average age for first grandchild must be well under 30.

I'm sure it would have been welcoming regardless of the result. We're generally a friendly bunch, unless maybe you walk into somewhere chavtastic by accident. Or happen to have a Tyneside accent

Fire Station is a relatively upmarket place (as far as Sunderland goes), but £20 for 2 pints and 2 soft drinks is a P**s take. I'd expect about £4.80 a pint of lager and £3 a pint of coke.

For what it's worth, it's still £3.70 a Coors in my local or £3.40 a Caffreys for the beer drinkers - so yep it's definitely still cheaper up north :p
