I would have loved to have gone to my usual haunt next to the Class 37 cab. However, with my kid in tow and not having enough time to do anything proper in town before the game, we ventured out to Alvaston Park. A quick 10-15 mins in the playground (he spent most of the time climbing a tree instead) and a walk by the lake, where there were plenty of birds, remote control boats and some Misfits style miscreants busy with "community payback".
Then we backtracked to Osmaston Men's Social Club (the little hut). What a find! Bass and Pedigree on tap, cobs for £1 each and a 50p pool table, where my son spent a happy half hour playing against a very friendly and slightly older home fan.
The walk to the ground from that direction was quick and easy and not so crowded as coming from the station. Might have to get my fill of Bass and cobs in Burton instead next season.
