Fan's View FAN’S VIEW 2025/26 –CHARLTON AWAY

If only for the sake of your liver @Paul B it's a good thing that he's gone. My opinion was, and is, that his style of football inevitably brings issues with the players unless, they were recruited, by him, to play specifically his style. We can but hope that the squad can recover their identity and start playing again. That is if they all want to, word has it that some have got bags packed ready for the 1st Jan.

Hope others have got bags packed ready to replace them. Bit of a mess isn't it?

Indeed. We have the connundrum of the recruitment fiasco (allegedly) in the summer and how that affects the coming window. I recall Grant Ferguson intimating that one summer target would be revisited, potentially a midfielder? But if we really want to be competitive then any budget, small or otherwise, is going to be stretched.

Thankfully, it is Christmas so, as Mrs L has suggested, it's ok to have a midweek drink!

Saving the Rowett chat for other threads......

.....but very, very glad to hear that the Royal Oak in Borough is still going strong. Was definitely on my "Top 5 London Pubs" list when I left a decade ago, but at least two of the others (Bree Louise, Jerusalem Tavern) are no more. Glad to hear it's still a gem. Was always great beer, great food and a great vibe in there.......

Too right Mrs L.
I don't normally indulge as I did on Saturday.

I started at the Old King's Head which is very convenient for the Jubilee line exit for Borough market. A proper old fashioned East End boozer with I think Proper Job and Harvey's sussex ale on draft. We've been there before for New Year's day when it was the only pub open before 12 for the early kick-off.

Next to the National Trust owned The George just along the road which is a 17th century galleried coaching inn with a large courtyard with lots of picnic tables and heaters. Two ales and a cider for £20.50. Sadly it's a Greene King pub with their usual beers that you can get anywhere in the country and of course their "stick the pub name on a badge on the beer font" and pretend it's specially brewed for that pub.

We went past the Bunch of Grapes to meet other fans at the Redwood Sports bar at London Bridge station. (no ales) and now up to around £22 for three beers.

Every pub we went in had Oxford fans in, so it seems a day-out in the capital is still not to be missed.

An easy 15 - 20 minute train to the ground and a short walk in. Sadly the catering at the away entrance was just the standard Pukka Pies. Half time at the far end they had what was supposed to be salt-beef, sauerkraut and mustard bagel - wrapped in foil so you couldn't see what you get before you buy. For £9.50 I was expecting a lot more than a small slice of salt beef with a bit of mustard in what seemed like a small brioche bun. Didn't even bother with the £7.70 peroni which was all that was on offer at the away bar.

As for the football it's all a bit depressing with apparently a tactic of trying not to concede more than one goal and a hope that we might somehow get a goal from somewhere / anywhere. When we got a late free-kick, without Cameron Brannagan I knew we were out of luck and our shot wasn't even on target. I'm not a fan of booing the manager during the match, but I can see that was the last straw for the owners. Once the fans have turned at the game and it's not just some random fans shouting on the internet, I could see GR's time was limited.

Post match some of our group had left early and got in the Old Kings Head but by the time the rest of us got there it was apparently rammed, so went to the George. Also very busy and no seating anywhere. Quick pint of plum pudding porter and gave up and got the train home.

If we are listing pubs we went in I did ten, as I went in ten I can’t remember what any of them are like but looking at my bank balance and judging by my hangover the next day they all sold expensive alcohol. Did these though

Pre game
Sunwharf
Barrowboy and Banker
The Mudlark
Horniman at Hays
Shipwright

Post game
Bunch of grapes
Southwark tavern
The George
Bridge tap
St Christopher’s inn

If you’re referring to the Jerusalem Tavern in Farringdon, it does still exist but was renamed to the Holy Tavern a few years ago. Much the same place as it used to be based on when I stopped by there a couple of weeks ago.

Quiet an array of pubs visited between us then. And some good information too. We must have got lucky with ours pricewise. The IPA in the Rake was £5 a pint and the Draft Bass £6. I was told the Royal Oak wasn't expensive either.

Interesting read but for one of the first times in my 50 years in following my team I was embarrassed by our supporters. The atmosphere was toxic with the chants of GR out which led to infighting around me of those that wanted to stay positive for the team who were obviously struggling. Love away games but this was a real low point for me. We’ve come a long way since the windy evenings of Eastbourne Borough and we need to up our game as supporters to make it a better experience, even when we are struggling.

I suspect those chanting for GR to go were not at Eastbourne and that a fair number of them were not even born then. (Could be wrong).

I may have been guilty of that. I was particularly frustrated by the youth chanting negatively at 0-0 in such an important game, and made my feelings known to them. Not sure it helped or registered. I remember Histon away 5-0 and -6c and feel it allows me to have some perspective,

Calls himself a true supporter but then forgets the goals from Willmott and Hutchinson 😉
