Fan's View Fan's View 20/21 - No.38 - Hull away

O for crying out loud. Doncaster, Blackpool, and Charlton only drew. Lincoln and Accy lost too. Perhaps it’s not quite time yet to put the slippers on and slouch in front of iFollow in “on the beach” mode. That’s more of a dream than ever. Now just supposing we beat Donny on Tuesday.

To do that though we have to start doing many things on the football pitch much more effectively than we have been doing for a while now. Like putting the ball in the bloody net.

And have a tactically adept manager. That wouldn't hurt as much as dumb-winger man and his abnegation of midfield.

Spot on Paul. I reckon our problem is in the middle of the park. CB Is a shadow of the player he was before his lay off. He plays far too deep and the whole back group spend too much time going sideways. I'm afraid we are just not good enough to be pushing for the Championship.

You are right we play six at he back when moving forwards .With Hanson back and Cam back we take to long moving forwards it's so slow and predictable.Hull when they attacked they got forward quickly and in numbers a strong side. When we get forward so often we only have one forward you do wonder where the goals are coming from .

I am not Mark Sykes’s biggest fan but we regressed badly after he was subbed off early in the second half with a knock.

He looked bright and energetic and gave us legs in front of Forde and they combined well going forwards.

Hanson and Brannagan were both playing as deep lying midfielders and both were struggling to move the ball forwards through the thirds
and were passing sideways and back. Despite both sitting they did not seem to offer any real protection to Moore and Atkinson
when we turned the ball over and were counter-attacked. Hanson did no where near enough in the centre of the park.

Ruffels was Oxford’s man of the match by a mile although positionally he was caught out one or two times.

I thought as the game went on Hull grew stronger and we grew weaker and their physicality was just too much for us.

Depressing, but I think you're right Paul. We are unhappily just not good enough. It becomes clear that our earlier good run was very much a result of us managing to beat a series of not very good teams, rather than showing promotion quality.

It is frustrating, because there *are* some decent players in there. But as a whole, as a team, we are quite often disjointed and static - relying of flashes of individual class rather than constantly having a way of playing that looks threatening. And even then, when we do manage to 'click' (as we did in the earlier parts of the first half yesterday), it often degenerates quite quickly into safety first tippy tappy, especially if we concede a goal.

I'd be happier if we started with a few less 'mercurial' wide men in the team next season and a few more attacking midfielders who can link the front and the back.

We lost because of two player errors. Ford lost his man. What does he offer cant defend cant cross the ball cant beat a man .All he does is pass backwards or sideways. Lee lost the ball they broke and scored. Since Barker and co have come in we have gone down hill. Barker is a luxury player and that is it . Shodipo is hot and cold. We needed pace on the wings we have them but they are inconsistent. Claire had pace he wasnt a full back .He played in midfield started playing better and he was off loaded, big mistake. Our style of play is tedious its getting worse every game 60% of possession looks good but its in our own half. Play Agi and Taylor up front give Shodipo and Barker a half each if they dont perform get them off. Get the ball upfield and stop the tappy football from the back it may work in the premiership but our players are not good enough. Big game Tuesday last throw of the dice play the formation as we have done we will lose. We cant score against the better teams. Ironic Portsmouth sack Jackett one win in seven only win is against us sums it up .If Robinson cant change it will be the same each season .We need to be more direct.

Agree with most of that. Bit harsh on Forde I think he is very effective from midfield tough for him against a very good player in a position he hasnt been filling much recently.

Forde is an excellent passer and crosser, though not a full back really. The only way we will play two up front and go more direct is if we sack Karl and get Big Sam in.

Sorry i would have to disagree for a dead ball specialist you often here the commentators saying you may get one decent cross. The last few games from a cross he cant beat the first man .His only contribution is sideways Hanson should have played right back Saturday.Ford goes up the wing poor cross has not the pace to get back.Generally i cant believe how poor are players are at crossing a ball to a team mate.

remind me whose cross led to Agyei heading across goal for Lee to score?

Good report Paul
Agree with everything you have said.
What concerns me that under KR we have scored plenty of goals, I think last season we were knocking 3 in every home game for a while
The difference the was we were moving the ball much quicker to our dangerous wide players.
I’m sure both Shodipo and Barker would be a handful if they got the ball quicker when they had space which is exactly what Hull were doing to us
The other point is a lack of midfield players in the box supporting the front man. Before he was injured Branagan was very good at getting into those positions. Now it maybe that to sure up our defence we don’t commit men forward but that certainly isn’t helping Taylor Agyei or Winnall

Can’t disagree with that, thin bloke. Upper middle at best. But been some entertaining games recently

Nonetheless, we tried which is more than my B team did v the Oli & the gooners last night. THAT was shocking.
