National News Extinction "Rebellion"

We cannot look to science for answers and then ignore it when we don't like what it says. If there is only a 5% chance that it is right, should we not do something about it? Would you fly in a plane with a 1/20 chance it would crash? Should we not explain to our kids what is happening in case it scares them? Surely we are all snowflakes if that happens. Would Germany announce a 90bn$ package to combat climate emergency if it wasn't real? Would most of the UK declare climate emergency if it wasn't backed up with hard science? The reason there are widespread global demonstrations isn't because privileged/crusties want a jolly and are bored - it is the lack of action to back up words. Not one of the nations who signed Paris have achieved the benchmarks required. The house is on fire. Wake up and smell the coffee. You might not want to change your daily habits and it is hard not to be easily labelled as a hypocrite for using a car/consuming etc but this is a toxic unsustainable society we have created - it isn't about China and India being major pollutants, it is about the west consuming the useless goods their factories produce and the UK carbon footprint per person is far worse than the developing world. Rather than break down the arguments of conscientious young people, get some of the expert scientists into the studio Mr Marr and try to break down their collective arguments. People who deny that there is a problem and that business as usual is OK are ignorant and should get a spine. Should we believe them, or the scientists?

I’m with Jonathan pie on this: when it comes to climate change your either a hypocrite or an A*****e, you just need to decide which. Going up against Andrew Neil unprepared is stupid, sure, but it doesn’t mean you’re wrong? It’s not particularly hypocritical to over state the possible future problems when the facts have been consistently understated and undermined for years and years despite pretty strong informed consensus.

I can't say I looked deeply into the owner of the account, but regardless of it, the video is the video. They look off their heads on something psychedelic don't they?
The people who look really off their heads are the people who, in the face of all scientific evidence, seem to believe that we can carry on regardless. The biggest polluters are companies and a very few high net worth individuals who are frequent flyers own several cars & so on. A McDonald’s is neither here nor there

XR policy is no drugs/alcohol at any events, so those who are "off their heads" are straddlers and not part of the movement

Margaret Thatcher was completely convinced of Climate Change and the need for action.

She was elected 40 years ago.

We didn't act.

I was talking to one of her former (late 80s) science advisors last week (who interestingly was a far lefty - she chose him despite huge dissent from Conservative central office). He said as much.

And who are they exactly?

breaking news in the last 30 min or so

on various Social media outlets, the above from a twitter feed
It's very very poor that someone has defaced the Cenotaph.

But for the person who tweeted that picture to say "The Cenotaph war memorial on Whitehall in London desecrated by #ExtinctionRebellion" is also poor. I am sure ER as a whole would also deplore it. It's one person who has scribbled that, not the movement as a whole. If someone sprays 'OUFC' on a war memorial, does that make the club, or it's supporters responsible as a group? No of course it doesn't.

Symbols can be powerful things and some people will always misuse them, from the right wing in this country trying to appropriate the flag of St George to fifteen year olds scribbling swastikas on their rough books. If they catch the person that did it, get them to clean it off and spend another few days cleaning graffiti off other places as well - but trying to damn a whole cause because of one idiot is very transparent.

So all those sneering at Extinction Rebellion “hypocrisy” (for being seen in a McDonalds or blocking traffic and causing meals to be wasted) but who are nonetheless convinced of the science behind climate change and the urgency of the situation- please let the rest of us know what you think they should be doing to get the economic and political change required.

Individuals moving to a vegan diet may be laudable for all sorts of reasons but it won’t make the difference.

They could also let us know say five things they have done to help the country understand the seriousness of the crisis.

How about you tell us what you do first?
