His first appearance for us was the 2-0 EFL Trophy win against Swindon. Slocombe was first choice until the 1-5 win against Stevenage where he was responsible for their goal. Buchel was then the benefiary of that by having a couple of cup games in a row, impressed enough to stay in goal and played until we next lost a game to Wycombe (a run of 10 matches or so). MApp then played Slocombe as first choice until he was again at fault for a goal in a home draw against Mansfield in early February after which Buchel kept net for the rest of the season.

Neither were spectacular but neither awful either. I think it's easy to view the GK position that season as a bit of a weak link when you consider the stellar talent playing in that team some of which went on to play in the PL, Europe, internationally and in the top flights across Europe - Roofe, Lundstram, Kenny, Baldock and O'Dowda. Wright, Mullins, Dunkley, Maguire, Ryan Taylor, Hylton and Skarz were all so solid. Most would have been in the shadow of those.

We would have had to have gained 13 more points to match Northampton and I don't think you can attribute that many dropped points to Slocombe and Buchel specifically. If we had better home form (defeats to Barnet, Luton and Accrington come to mind), I reckon we may have got a bit closer. Our away form was outrageous - we only lost two matches away and had six matches where we scored more than four on travels across all comps.

Wilder's Northampton weren't anywhere near as interesting as we were but they were metronomically consistent. They didn't lose a match after 19th December including winning 10 in a row.

Really freaky form. They also had Ryan Clarke, Alfie Potter, Chris Hackett and Danny Rose all play for them at some point that season. Ricky Holmes scored 11 goals and they had Dominic Calvert-Lewin in for the first half of it.

Yeah I was probably exaggerating there, we were not a machine type side, the cup games took a lot out of us as well, but as I said further down with a better goalie we probably don't go into the last game needing anything. But where is the fun in that, you wouldn't swap our season with Northampton's, especially with what has followed it for us and them, both our success as a club and what the players we had went on to do, only really the manager in Wilder from that side pushed on (ignoring Calvert Lewin) whereas we had players go onto prem clubs, championship and even into Europe.

Oh without a doubt. They can have their title and their series of 1-0 wins. We were a much better watch and MApp completely shithoused their victory parade with the 'best team in League 2' comment that they became obsessed with.

We finished 16 points better off than them for the season after and they went down the season after that.

It's worth remembering that we went deep in cups that season too, I think after the Blackburn and Millwall 2nd leg defeats our league form dropped off, I remember us dropping points at home to Bristol Rovers, Mansfield, Accy and Northampton themselves in the space of a few weeks, it wasn't until we thrashed Dagenham that we actually looked in promotion form again, after that I think we only lost 1 of our final 11/12 games.

I remember Buchel getting bullied horribly away at Wimbledon in 2016, many shouts of "dodgy keeper" from the home crowd. Once they levelled up I was just waiting for us to lose the game. Then step up Jordan Bowery to win it for us out of nowhere. One of a few turning points in the run in that I properly thought "wait a minute, this might actually happen."
I saw Benji the next day in M&S Cowley retail park doing some shopping. I had a nice chat with him, lovely lad.
He said he'd never had such a tough time in a game. Every corner or set piece they roughed him up. He had a couple of big red marks on his arms and said he had others on his body where he'd been hit that looked like they would turn into bruises.
So I'll cut him some slack. He was the better of the two IMO.

Büchel would have stayed in goal after the Wycombe game as well but had to return home as his father fell ill. Once everything was in order he took the number 1 shirt back and kept it for the rest of the season.

I’m amazed Sam Slocombe is still playing for a decent team, though I’m not sure he’s first choice any more.

He isn’t, he made 14 appearances last season and hasn’t played for Notts County since the end of March. Very much 2nd choice now. He is 36 now though so I’m not sure how bothered he will be by being 2nd choice keeper.
His last game for county was against Swindon of all teams.

[Simon Eastwood nods with approval.]

A couple of the minor International teams played last night with Callum O'Dowda playing as Eire lost out 5-0 to the Empire of Angles
Over the two games of England vs Republic, Grealish, Rice (both played age groups and/or friendlies for the Republic) and Connor Gallagher (Irish passport used to sign as an EU Player for Atletico) all scored for an England team managed by ex-Irish international Lee Carsley. Then to really take the P**s England even added a final goal scored by Roy Keane's son-in-law!!

(I know not our ex-players, but we have history the other way around with this and John Aldridge and Ray Houghton being among the first to use the grandparent rule back in 80s as well as COD playing for the Republic now)
