Ex Player Ex-Player Thread

during his tenure of taking us on a (downward) journey, wasnt it our current slum landlord who in effect 'shut down' the youth system that we had?

IL during his tenure started to lay the groundwork for rebuilding it....and reintroduced/ revamped oufc womens football at a reasonable level

having watched u23s and u18s quite a few times this past season, Id say we have some serious potential and promise for the future... esp with KR happy to give promising youngsters a go in the first team, and long may it continue too

As well as the slum landlord, for part of the time we had Ian Atkins as manager and he was very resistent to using youth players* (Sam Ricketts and Simon King who even then looked a classy player were released by him) and give them new contracts (ie. Dean Whitehead not being offered a new contract soon enough meaning he left and his reluctance to use him at times even though clearly our best midfielder).

*Yet used some absolute dross he signed like Danny Brown.

Jonny Mullins retires from full time football

Good luck to him on the next stage. Youtube for some reason recommended the Oxford vs Swansea cup highlights from 2016 and he made a fantastic block in the 2nd half.

*Brown was basically swapped for King with Barnet.

One other thing to remember is what happens to young players that we release. Most have to drop down the pyramid into part-time football, which then means decisions need to be made about whether they can continue to go all out to make as a pro footballer or whether they have to move into another career and just stay part-time.

With the advent of the regional second tier of the Conference, plus certain local sides (eg City) moving up the payramid, there are now more opportunities for leavers to get into a reasonable level of non-league which can give them a small window of opportunity to do what Cundy has done, whereas even just ten years ago there were no other Oxon sides above the 4th level of non-league which prettymuch sealed the fate of any player released unless they were able to finance a move away (eg Alex fisher who moved to Holland to get pro football).

To be fair to Kassam, although he wanted to scrap the youth system entirely, he did relent when challenged both internally and by a fledgling OxVox/U's yOUth group and left the core structure just about intact (albeit funded at the bare minimum allowed). This actually was crucial because it meant that key people in todays setup were retained, and some of those to come through eventually (such as O'Dowda) remained in our system and not someone else's. Wycombe lost their system entirely and have struggled to put anything back in place since. Ours only took off again, once the Lenagans got involved, but at least they had something to work with.

I also think the story of Sam Long is an interesting one, because he only got to stay on because the Dev Squad was formed the year he graduated, and every summer since he has been in line for the chop (certainly from a fans perspective), yet here we are with playing an important part in our end of season rise from the depths. So, given time then we will have more people come through than say when the likes of Matt Taylor were coming through and the budget/manager/wage cap/etc dictated that all young players needed to be first team ready by 18 or 19 or they were out, which is why he left, and maybe one or two others who could have succeeded too. Let's face it, given the criteria that were in place for retention at some points, O'Dowda would have been released along with the rest of guys he graduated with - it was only because we were able to introduce him gradually (and had managers that were willing to do that) that we saw him come to the fore.

So, this is a really exciting time for the club, because we have a very promising cohort coming through, a system (with a number of very talented staff) which will allow them to develop at their own pace over the next couple of years, a chairman/board who are fully supportive of the system, and a manager who is willing to give them opportunites when others might not. Long may it continue (or is that may Long continue?)

There was another thread about Cundy where someone looked at six or so players who we released who end up at a higher level. There is only so much time our club can afford to keep sending young players out on loan whilst they develop and we don't have the luxury of being able to keep players in their 20s out on loan in the hope they will bulk out etc. Unlike the EPL teams who can keep players on their books for much longer.

Also the thread where sb said we'd missed a chance to sign a young lad who's gone on contract terms to STFC. Again, we can't sign every youngster, and there is always going to be someone we missed out on, or who took the chance to try for a bigger academy.

We have a 30% sell on clause with Callum apparently...reported that he could go for up to 6 million this summer. Should help pay Darryl off a bit quicker...

Looks like there is a theme starting to appear when O’Dowda wants to move clubs.

He really is a prick, isn't he? I mean, you can kind of forgive him once for pulling this kind of stunt when leaving us, as he was younger and it certainly made sense from a footballing perspective to go to a team who'd just gotten into League One to a team in the Championship who could pay good wages, but twice isn't a good look. He'll get a reputation now.

I can't see why he'd want to leave Bristol City either. It's a well-run club that finished only four points outside the play-offs, and plus he's hardly set the world alight in the Championship this year. A lot of players would kill for the opportunities he's had, and he seems to be taking a lot for granted.

A nice pay rise might be a reason to leave Bristol City or he's just ambitious and wants to play at the highest level as soon as possible. Haven't a clue either way mind.

No sympathy for Bristol City at all. They were happy to benefit from COD's tactics to get the move to them so tough if it then happens to them.

Also, isn't there supposed to be a sell on clause? If so, I hope they get a good price for him (the quoted £6m will do).

Even if Whitehead had been offered a contract earlier, he wouldn’t have signed it. He was always destined for bigger things. I think Rix offered him something but Deano was too good for League 2 (and certainly too good for any side that Rix would assemble).

As for Cundy, well done to him. I saw him play the full 90 in a JPT game away at Dagenham when MApp gave him a run out. He looked assured although green when faced against wily old veteran Jamie Cureton. That was many moons ago now though and best of luck to him having a second go in the FL.

If we had offered Whitehead a deal earlier, he would have likely signed from what I heard at the time.

That's a little harsh battman. O'Dowda merely took no crap from a greedy Eales who tried fleecing him. He spent 13 years with us and was a big part in our promo to L1. He has been at Bristol for 3 years and doesn't want to sign a new deal, big deal! - obviously better things in the pipeline. Good on him and good for us when we get a decent % in his sale. Keep it real
