Ex-Player Thread Ex-Player Thread

Who is Ben Davis? Presumably not the spurs one. Is he one of ours? Not a very thai sounding name! Apologies for my ignorance.
We signed him from Fulham, I seem to remember he was relatively highly rated, but only ever played 17 minutes in a trophy game and made the bench a few times

His dad is English but he grew up in Singapore according to Google

Nah, loads of semi pro footballers have been on it and done well, have to watch it as the missus and little un do so I am like the forum expert on it, they always give their occupations as footballer then you look who they play for and have to laugh, but a lot of semi pro footballers seem to double up as social media influencers now.

I shall be supporting our former academy players attempt to get his end away and form a fake relationship for money on national tv, come on Dejon.

You'd have been well jel a couple of years ago.

Wifey and I went to South Africa and there were loads of beautiful and slightly drunk people on the plane. Wifey further found, during a journey to the conveniences, that we were sharing a plane with the Love Island cast and crew who were on their way out to film.

I was 'this close' to true greatness for a few hours.

That’s the winter edition, a second series which did less well and was replaced with an all stars version after two years, the all stars just being previous years contestants.

Interesting that they all fly out together considering in the first episode they all pretend it’s the first time they have seen each other, if Love Island is faked then you have to question is anything really true? Are we living the Matrix?

Not going to say any more than that.
The old man came up for one of the Man City and Bristol city away games with me.

After doing some extensive research (ok, ok, I went to his wikipedia page), last update has him working a personal trainer from 2022, following an attempt at boxing, where he had 3 amateur wins before training to have a professional fight, which he had to pull out of due to injury.

Can we get this utter shite away from this thread now? Rather talk about ANY ex-player than f*****g Love Island!

Leo Roget
Mark E'Beyer
Scott Guyett
Lee Mansell
Oussama Zamouri
Carl Pettefer

What are they up to?

I've never understood the appeal of Love Island for the yoof of today. It's so unfathomably boring with some attractive young people chatting around a pool. Nothing much happens.

I chose one of the names above at random.

Mark ('A+++++, First Class Service!!!1') E'Beyer is now in the family business selling fireplaces.

Almost certainly because he was lit* for us 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥.

(*He was not.)

EDIT. Oh, and Lee Mansell is still in football as a Player Service Executive at the Professional Footballers Association.

Liechtenstein is German-speaking, not French, so Buckel is right
I lived in Austria and still (just about- I used to be fluent) speak German, with an Austrian accent. The Lichtenstein German accent is most like that of Voralberg (the western tip of Austria). There's an umlaut over the ü in Büchel, so the vowel is elongated. Phonetically, it would sound most like 'Boochell'.

Separately, I never thought Büchel was particularly good, but he had guts. I saw him play for us at AFCW. They spent 90 minutes kicking lumps out of him, but he just kept going. He's had a pretty good career tbf.
The strange thing about that L2 promotion season is that neither of our keepers was particularly good (slocombe and bichel) but the team was so brilliant it didn't matter.

That league 2 promotion team could have made the play offs in league one at least imo. Some team.

Agree. I thought Büchel was a fraction better than Slocombe but they were both pretty weak links. If we'd had a better keeper we'd have 100+ points that season. I think (?) 6-7 of that team went on to play Championship or higher.

Joel Cooper signs new deal with Coleraine.
Considered by far the best player in NI domestic football today. Such a shame he couldn't settle with us. KR used to burble on about his 'personal problems', but he was just homesick. I saw him play in one of his very few appearances for us (Accrington?) and thought he looked really useful. He was a far better player imo than Whyte, Smyth and Sykes. He's late 20's now, so will never play outside NI again. Probably the best player in the last 20+ years not to make it outside NI football. There's been a lot of chat about him getting into the NI squad, but Michael O'Neill (NI manager) is very reluctant to pick players who only play in NI, as the standard is so poor- L2/NL, at best. Depends on your point of view, of course, but a real waste of talent.

Better than Sykes? That would make him championship level which means he has turned away serious money.

Büchel was definitely the better of the two. I seem to remember him actually being a decent shot stopper - it was the fact he had no physical presence and couldn't command his box that let him down.

He actually made, imo, one of the most important saves by an Oxford keeper in my lifetime supporting us. It was away at Barnet in 2016 and he made an unbelievable save from a John Akinde header late in the first half that kept it at 0-0 going into the break, when going behind could have seen us crumble. We'd already lost at home to them earlier in the season because we couldn't cope with their physicality, and if that header had gone in I definitely couldn't see us winning the game. For me it was a real sliding doors moment as we eventually won 3-0, and it was coming out of that game with a win that convinced me we'd get over the line. Chey Dunkley was also incredible that game, managed to beat Akinde to pretty much everything in the air and kept us from succumbing to the barrage.

So whilst Büchel will never go down in the history books as our finest keeper, he did make one huge contribution to our promotion season that often gets forgotten. (I'm also aware he probably cost us, but I can't actually recall a specific mistake that resulted in us dropping points - happy to be educated.)
