Agreed. On my way home and that was a very poor experience. The atmosphere was absolutely flat and the game itself never really got going.

Some fairly ‘robust’ challenges all around though.

This ref should never be allowed to officiate an international again.

For what it's worth, the ref isn't on the long list to be considered for the World Cup......in fact, he doesn't even appear to be one of Germany's top refs.

So why exactly he was doing this game is a mystery......surely a game like this would have been good to get one of the refs who might actually be at the World Cup a bit of an international football tune up? It was always likely to be on the spicy end of the spectrum for a friendly.

He is...he's on the FIFA Elite list from this year and has been doing international games since 2022. And Champions League since last year...

For what it's worth he's a decent ref from what I've seen live.

A bright spot in the game for me was commentator Sam Matterface’s misuse of the word “incommunicado” when he informed us that “the ref has been incommunicado with the bench”. He made the same error in something else he said a few minutes later.

It reminded me of Jimmy Greaves’s misuse of the word on “Saint and Greavsie” many years ago, which made me smile at the time and which was picked up by Private Eye’s Colemanballs. It went something like this:

Ian St John: “Have you spoken to Brian [Clough] yet, Jimmy?”
Greavsie: “Not yet, Saint, but I expect to be incommunicado with him very shortly.”

Had a pub quiz last night and realised I was missing an England game. Oh well, I thought, can't let the team down, so off to the Chequers.

Correct choice: not only had I not missed anything, but we won the quiz! Happy days

I've given up on International football. It's absolute garbage and I wouldn’t pay to watch it.
It's like watching a game of chess where all the players are worried about making mistakes. I will probably change my mind when it comes to the World Cup games but not before.

Oh, Sam Matterface is a shocker - in the rare instances I watch Permier or European football on the TV, if he is the commentator I instantly shut it down. Another one who can’t shut-up and feels the need to cram in researched facts and seemingly spontaneous comments, which are obviously scripted. Oh, he is also in the habit of dropping into some sort of Cockney/Thames estuary accent, as if by magic, that improves his credibility with the TV punter.

The other thing that irritated me last night was very specific - I sat behind a group of Man Utd ‘fans’ who had obviously never been to a live game before or travelled further north than Essex but discussed the game with a pundits eye.

Where we were sat there was a group of Arsenal fans. Cheered every Gooner but booed every Man U player. Was also strange no reaction from them when a Spuds player touched the ball.
There was me thinking we were all there to support England.
Did notice a big OUFC flag opposite where we were sat. Tried to get a pic of it but just not quite the right angle

Again on this, he was the ref last night at Dresden vs Hertha, which featured massive fan riots, pitch invasions and pyro/things on fire. The ref has received massive praise from both sides, the police and organisers for how he managed the situation and got the game to a safe end.

I was never questioning that he's a genuine Bundesliga ref.

But he isn't someone that Germany are going to be sending as their ref to the World Cup, and he isn't someone who UEFA are giving the big Champions League games to.

I was just commenting that if you've got a friendly going on a few months before the tournament with two World Cup contenders, I don't know why they didn't have a World Cup ref doing the officiating.
