3rd Test England V Australia - Headingley

It's a great point. Reportedly, Graham Thorpe had a massive pop at the batsmen yesterday for their performance and the lack of footwork and desire to play balls at a 5th stump width.
Jason Roy clearly wasn't listening to Thorpe then, his footwork to the ball that got him out was comical. He literally tripped over his own foot.

The pity is that we've got to tea two down for ninety - which isn't bad, given that Roy is a walking wicket so we start at one down! - but are still 270 behind. If we' managed similar in the first innings this would be a very different game.

Roy confirmed today something that we all knew. He's not a test matcher opener and may not be a test match cricketer either. He looks completely clueless out there and if they want to play him in the future, he needs removing from the mix

I still believe that we'll pull off a very unlikely victory! Root is batting like he used to before becoming captain, and Stokes is showing huge discipline. 200 odd runs is still a massive ask, but get through to lunch without losing a wicket and we might just have the upper hand.

We will probably lose Root in the first over tomorrow, then battle on to the new ball, before collapsing in true England style.

Would love to be proved wrong and the batters to turn up and pull this off, just can't see it.

Get the shine off the new ball...……………..and you never know.

Bairstow is looking to be more positive and not just sitting in. As well as seeing off the new ball we need to keep chipping away at the total. A lead of 200 allows the Aussies to keeping banging the ball in, get that to around 100 with 6 wickets remaining and it becomes a different game.

First part done. In a weird way, losing Root has probably been a good thing. He batted well yesterday but it was like the enormity of this game as his future as captain was too much and he didn't seem in the same head space today. Bairstow and Stokes need to keep their heads down for the first half hour after lunch and then tick over with the runs like they have in the last hour. The Aussies look a very different side when trying to contain rather than being aggressive. Getting under 100 to win will be the next big psychology barrier, then Bairstow and Stokes hopefully getting their 50's and before long things could be looking very good indeed!

Sorry to sound the pessimist but as good as the day has gone so far, the Aussies know that ONE decent ball changes the whole complexion again. The threat of the ever possible ‘England collapse’ is never far away and Lyons is bowling like a demon again today. So far so good but one ball at a time..

Indeed. The old adage 'add two wickets' and the whole thing looks very different.

Regardless, very well done, England, on that last session. Watchful and patient with a little spurt of attacking play to push the scoreboard along and to put the Aussies on the back foot. Intelligent cricket.

Mistakes like the one Root made will happen. Limit those to one per session and we could run this very, very close.

I'm still erring towards the Aussies as Lyon is starting to tick and if the tail are exposed Cummins and Hazelwood will have tonnes of fun, but as long as there is a glimmer of hope, I'll hold onto it! If Bairstow and Stokes survive the post-lunch first hour, who knows?

Another vague shot outside off stump... Need to be better there England.

Idiotic again!! No need to look for a run there.
We are beating ourselves.
Major changes needed for the rest of the series.
