National News End Child Food Poverty

I post some evidence from the Insititute of Fiscal Studies and you post a random rant from a right wing West Ham fan and treat them as equal.

I'm starting to understand why the country and the Conservative Party are in the mess they are.

Have some feckless that can`t budget .........or spend their rent benefits on "other stuff".

Not to detract from the thread too much, but I’ve long since been fully in favour of a subject at school that is essentially called Life. For years I’ve felt that part of the curriculum, even just one hour per week for the last year or two prior to leaving, should be put in place. Teach kids everything they need to know about things like tax and PAYE deductions and how it works / what it means / where it goes, household budgeting and maintenance, utilities services - anything at all that is simply part of being an adult human being who (hopefully) has a job and has bills to pay. What is the process of buying and moving into a house? What is negative equity? What is council tax? There are lots of little things that most of us on here will know all about, or at least know enough about, that we had to learn as we went. It would be the ‘subject’ that universally affected everybody in the room. Yes, you could argue that such things should be taught in the home, but you can start drawing the line all over the place if you want to go down that route. I think it would be infinitely more beneficial than most subjects, and it’s only one hour per week. Why not?
I agree with all that you have put.
I also agree with the view that schools should teach life skills. I would add to your list loans, credit cards, and personal finance generally .
Why is that less important than Shakespeare and Medieval History as an example.

I'd say more algebra, R.E and PSHE!! But agree with the sentiment. More vocational stuff required.

850k signatures suggests not everyone shares the "give them more free stuff" idea.

I agree no child should be hungry in this country.

However why that happens is not as simple as we would think, and neither is the route to solving it long term.

Short term, during the pandemic - feed them - but manage that locally as it should be a local authority responsibility - they have been given the money to do it.

Long term - educate people about budgeting, cooking from scratch and "life essentials".

Keep it simple and emphasis the parent responsibilities.

You'd get rid of algebra? You can't think of any use for that? Blimey...

I'd agree with RE though, there's your opening for a Life course.

“Give them more free stuff”
What a repulsive way to talk about feeding hungry children.

2000 paediatric doctors talk about malnourishment they see

essex yellows- “ they just want free stuff”

they need food mate. Take a good long look at yourself.

I was thinking how about reducing our foreign aid by 10% and keeping it in house to help those who need whilst at the same time giving some education on healthy cooking and lifestyle (although not all of these people having lived opposite a block of flats for 14 years I have witnessed their lifestyle). This will still leave us as the 3rd biggest financial contribution £wise and 6th % of GDP so as the 6th biggest economy on the planet still more than making our £ contribution and 6th highest per GDP.

Better to reduce spending on HS2 by 100%.

Frothy socialist takes line out of context shocker.

Something I read online.......

"So here we are, hitting the socialists wall of hierarchical bullshit, where the initial premise seems to be..."We have infinite money".
We don't, choices have to be made by people willing to act like adults, and not just flap their jaws like one.
Here's the example, you have got one penny to spare, you can either give it to free school meals for kids, or you can give it to free cancer treatment for kids......choose.
You make your choice, doesn't matter what the choice is, but you've made it.
Then some prick comes along and says "Well, why didn't you give another penny?"
Don't you want to share, why are you so selfish, what do you have against kids who are starving/have cancer (delete as appropriate)?"
So, you decide to dig deep, and give another penny.....good for you.
Then, a sanctimonious prick comes along and asks you why you've only given away two pennies, when there's kids starving and dying of cancer.
By this stage, if you've got half a brain, you know for sure that even if you can make further sacrifices and find another penny, you're back to square one and there's always a self righteous w****r around the corner, ready and willing to tell you how much more you should give to other people and how evil you are for having priorities.
Now, I'm not suggesting that you actually are any of the aforementioned people, I don't know you from Adam. I expect you're a decent, well intentioned human being. Or perhaps you're sat wearing nothing but sack-cloth, because you give every spare penny to poor kids with cancer, in which case.....what the f**k have you got against blind orphans who need braille lessons? Heartless bastard. "

Already over committed to the point it can`t stop.
Land purchases made, preparation work done etc etc.
Backing out now would probably cost more than building it.

Should have been scrapped in 2009.
Technology has advanced faster than the need to shave 10 minutes off a train journey.

Whist in part I agree unfortunately it’s to far down the line as it were now. Living in Banbury it goes about 5 miles from us and too much money has long since been paid out in compensation now. Also far too much work is ongoing.

At the moment we have infinite money more or less. The Bank of England makes money when it chooses. It can borrow at zero interest at the moment The IMF has said it’s a grave mistake to try and balance the books at this points I’d say spending on children’s health and education is about the most important thing a country can do.

instead -as well as refusing to provide food despite ample evidence of need, this government is insisting that all schools can teach online whilst cutting back massively on the laptops they can loan out.

Amazing how 'its just numbers on spreadsheets' when it suits, isn't it ?

I do admire Rashford and his desire to provide children with food to satisfy hunger.
If a lot of high earning premiership players were contributing a substantial sum of their huge incomes it might be more palatable to those earning far less than them.
At the end of the day the money has to do this has to come from somewhere. Central government has no money and collects it from the taxpayer or runs up a debt for future generations.
This does remind me of Feed The World. Bob Geldof, a multi millionaire telling the wider public, give us your money and give it to us now.
There is obviously more poverty in the U.K. than there has been for decades. The unemployment resulting up north will hold back the economy for many years. Hospitality is wrecked. Office blocks empty in London. Shopping will be decelerated in the high street while internet sales boom.
There is so much woe to come next year. After the help house buyers have been given along with furlough prepare for the fallout with house prices slumping. Expect shares and pensions to fall if Covid is allowed to cause lockdowns everywhere.
The only positive coming out of our dire situation is people are becoming more community spirited and less selfish

Sir Tom is a perfect example of that.

Excellent to see the public rallying behind "their own" without the need for a BBC 1 charity appeal evening, hosted by Lenny Henry. People do what's right when it's needed. Maybe if we come out of this as a more compassionate community it would in some ways have been worth it.

And yet that Central Govt has enough to give many £ms to the likes of Serco even though they keep failing.

We've no idea what Rashford is or isn't giving. He's certainly putting his time. I'm sure he's been making donations. but that's not the point he;'s been giving a voice to people who don't have one. The government could solve this overnight. As others have said this is a pittance compared to the the money central government has spent elsewhere.

and those premiership players all pay PAYE, unlike the likes of Rees Mogg and co.

investing in people or infrastructure is the best single thing a country can do.

I agree that the community spirit has been amazing people from all over the country coming together. But how much better if the government found ways to harness that energy.

Wonder why old bashamwonderland mentioned Lenny Henry just then? Is there something he doesn't like about Lenny?
