International Politics Donald Trump πŸŠπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

What a sad and cynical viewpoint. I presume the Americans you speak to are the cocooned air force personnel you meet in your local. Are they really able to offer worldly wise perspective?
Probably not. I'm not saying they all think like that. But many do. They spend all these year away from home and family they want something to show for the sacrifice. They often seem to expect favorable treatment even under the law and often the US obliges. See the link for a departure from our local airbase.

So today I was with an American who actually was pretty hacked off with Trump he is ex forces though and has retired here. Obviously those that like international and choose to stay here are different than those who join the forces to project American power and just want to get back to their home town.

I had a brief military stint before being medically discharged due to injury. And many of us join because we want to project Britain's military power in the sole support of Britain. We don't join to do global good distribute aid ect or whatever recruitment campaigns of today focus upon. I don't think I would do the same now because the Britain of my youth is not the Britain of today. We have changed and not for the better. Indeed military recruitment adverts of today seem to focus on everything except neutralising the enemy and projecting hard power.

How incredibly sad. It's a personal opinion, but I think that an absolutely tragic attitude. I think my dialogue with you is over, Matty.

i cant see these tarrif staying long i expect countries to make a few concessions (reduce tarrifs). trump to claim victory and off we go again as we were. currently its like a gorilla throwing its weight around the cage eventually he will find out it hurts himself too and will be looking to take a minor victory he can blow up into something bigger.

He has rich friends in apple meta and of course Elon. They dont want a reduction in trade reducing stock price ect. Even today Elon was talking about a zero tariff EU US trade zone. i'm optimistic a deal will be done.

I'm sorry but these service men are not making a 'sacrifice' being away from home in the UK. When men and women sign up they know they will have to serve overseas - they can't think they will be spending their military careers in the US. They are well looked after, with many of the comforts of home being offered at concessionary rates.

I grew up in an army household - amongst others, my Dad did tours in Kenya, Belize and twice in Northern Ireland, he never talked about 'sacrifice' but about a job being done. It's quite different when service men and women are in actual war zones, fighting for their very lives but spending time on bases in the UK is not a 'sacrifice' - it's called working away from home. Sounds like you're chatting to a bunch of whining Trumpites with a very sheltered view of the real world.

+1 from another army brat.

Top Marks for the Mexican President . . well said πŸ‘ πŸ‘ πŸ‘

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded to Trump’s threats with a backhand:
"So, you voted to build a wall.
Well, dear Americans, even if geography isn’t your strong suitβ€”since you consider America a country rather than a continentβ€”you should know that beyond that wall, there are 7 billion people.
And since the word 'people' might not resonate with you, let’s call them 'consumers.'
These 7 billion consumers can switch from iPhones to Samsung or Huawei in less than two days.
They can swap Levi’s for Zara or Massimo Dutti and, within six months, replace Ford and Chevrolet with Toyota, KIA, Mazda, Honda, Hyundai, Volvo, Subaru, Renault, or BMWβ€”brands that often outperform in quality.
They can cancel Direct TV, and though they might not want to, they can stop watching Hollywood films in favor of higher-quality productions from Latin America or Europe, which offer richer narratives and better cinematography.
Believe it or not, people can skip Disney and instead visit the Xcaret resort in Cancun, or explore destinations in Mexico, Canada, South America, and Europe.
Even in Mexico, you’ll find better hamburgers than McDonald's, with superior nutritional value.
Have you ever seen pyramids in the U.S.?
Egypt, Mexico, Peru, Guatemala, and Sudan all have ancient wondersβ€”none of them in the U.S.
If they did, Trump would probably have bought and sold them by now.
We know that Nike isn’t the only sneaker brandβ€”there’s Adidas, and even Mexican brands like Panam.
We understand the economy more than you think.
And we also know that if these 7 billion consumers stop buying American products, unemployment will rise, and your economyβ€”trapped within its self-imposed wallβ€”will crumble to the point where you'll beg us to tear it down.
We didn’t want to do this, but... You wanted a wall?
Well, you got one."

Her approval ratings to historical levels, with one recent poll putting her support at 85 percent!
And this is just the beginning of the foreign fallout coming our way, compliments of our FΓΌhrer.
As tensions continue to rise, and the world watches closely, and many fear that we are on the brink of a crisis that could reshape global politics for years to come.

Thanks again, MAGATS! You own this and what is to come!
It’s refreshing to see a woman bitchslap Trump!
Well done!

Agree with her point but there are ancient (around 800-1600) pyramids in the US. The Mississippian Culture had them with a quite a well known site (Cahokia) as shown below:

Indeed. . . not that Trump and the MAGAs would give the tiniest of shts about them. It's not the kind of Murcan culture they like to celebrate and promote, let alone try to understand/accept.

Pretty sure Trump has stage 3 syphilis....something else he has in common with Al Capone.

Did you know that China refer to Trump as "the nation builder"...but the nation they refer to most certainly isn't the US!

Still over 3.5 years to go, folks....

And Capone died through having syphilis so maybe just maybe Trump……..well you never know.

Its a Brexit bonus................. :)

It also reveals how much of a tariff some countries put on american goods.
You've lost your one 'bonus' after.....checks notes ........four days!!!

I called it, its just a negotiation strategy and it seemed Starmer played it well by not retaliating immediately.

Well done you - seems we were all naively thinking that Trump was making this up as he goes along. The announcement tariff 90 day window certainly caught out one of his trade advisors who was being grilled in congress at the time and had no knowledge of what was going on.

Its a simple negotiation tactic show the world how far you are prepared to push. To force them to come to the table to sign fair trade aggreements. You cannot continually run your trade in a deficit to third countries That is exporting wealth that the US is paying for by borrowing 11 trillion dollars over the last 4 years that was unsustainable. The US consumes too much it isnt good for the Trade deficit and isnt good for the environment either. Trump doesnt care about the latter though. The dollar is too strong when compared to countries like china that deliberately manipulate their currency it makes US exports too expensive and makes the US uncompetitive. I dont blame Trump for trying to rectify trade imbalances.

It actually shows where real power is this week and that's not really in the democratic institutions. It isnt governments it is in the financial markets they moderated Trump like they knocked over new labour in 2008 and Liz Truss also. I heard someone whining on the radio their child trust fund had gone down which was supposed to pay for kids university. Well thats just rubbish financial planning she wasn't complaining when the stock market was unsustainably high on artificially low interest rates and unsustainable government debt.

Another interpretation is Trump backed down because the US bond market was about to bankrupt his government. But if that the only way you can twist your mind in order to continue to support Trump then so be it.

You seem to think Taiwan, South Korea et al are forcing US citizens to buy their goods. If that the only way you can twist your mind in order to continue to support Trump then so be.

Ok so point the finger at the people who actually understand the probably consequences of Trump's actions and not Trump. If that the only way you can twist your mind in order to continue to support Trump then so be.

Taking China out of the equation here - currency control, state subsidy and low cost labour - you can not reasonably eliminate the trade deficit with many countries without, as you allude to here, suppressing consumer demand in the US, which is a rich country.

What do the likes of Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Bangladesh and many Asian and South American countries actually need from the US? Natural resources and varying levels of economic and social development mean that many trade balances are unavoidable. In those cases what is a 'fair trade agreement'? Lots of these countries had trade agreements with the US but it seems they carry no weight and Trump and his lackeys can't be trusted anyway.

US has a trade surplus with Oz as well as a free trade agreement. So what is the point of a 10% tariff other than a big generic f**k off?

Not necessarily dear person.

DT has dragged people to the negotiating table and we will have the likes of David Lammy batting for us.

OK, your right, we are fecked. πŸ˜‚ πŸ˜‚
