Hi all, I'm a life long Oxford fan studying media in Newcastle and am currently doing my dissertation on homophobia and other issues in football. I've made a survey that will only take up to 5 minutes and am in desperate need of responses as my deadline is coming up in a month. The link is here https://forms.gle/tQUVutQQPCJ62EeD6, thank you and have a good rest of your day!

thanks

that helped me answer the question about whether I think
traditional/toxic masculinity in football contributes to homophobia and abuse*

Done.

Completed and good luck at Newcastle. Never been but looks a great place to be

Done - good luck with it 👍

One thing that is interesting about this topic is the contrast between mens and women's football on this issue.

In the men's game, it appears as a player the reluctance to stick one's head above the parapet and 'come out' is still strong - despite what I would actually suggest is an environment that would be largely open and accepting.

Yet, in the women's game, the proportion of players, even at international level is remarkably, if not disproportionately, high ( a third or more?)

Is it as simple as the personal characteristics that enabled them to battle to get the women's game to this level are mirrored in their willingness to and comfort in being open about their sexuality? Or is there more to it?

Sorry, but I don't click on 'links' from people I don't know.
Appreciate the point being made Robin. Just thought that if anyone was thinking the same way, I can absolutely vouch for the poster and the safety of the link. Any shenanigans and he won't be getting a lift to future games!

Closed off responses now as I've had a sufficient amount of responses, thanks all!

There was definitely a lot more homophobia in football (well on the terraces) when I was a lad. Interestingly I never saw much racism and even saw some BNP/National Front canvassers getting abused and then chased away. Glad there is less of it now. I like to think that if a player wanted to come out (or just acknowledge that he had a male partner) no one would give a monkeys. At least I hope so.
