General Didcot And OUFC

I was in the main bar at Didcot Town FC earlier. They have an array of football shirts and memorabilia on the wall. Lots of clubs are represented but not us. I commented to the lady hosting me about the lack of any OUFC stuff and her reply was ‘it’s all Reading fans here so no one will want to see Oxford stuff’.

I know there are Reading fans in Didcot but I’d always seen it as more Oxford than Plastic. It was certainly almost all Oxford when I was a lot younger.

Have we lost the once Berkshire town to Chelsea reserves?

I know loads of Oxford fans in Didcot, imagine she is a Reading fan on the wind up. I reckon if you saw the amount of fans that travel from Didcot train station to Oxford away games it would be a lot more than Reading.

Didcot was always more Reading than Oxford. Like Wantage has a large number of Swindon fans but Abingdon, Witney, Carterton is majority Oxford from memory.

My brother in law is from Didcot and a season ticket holder. Got the train with him to Millwall from Didcot and the platform was full of OUFC fans.

Not quite. Maxwell said he wanted a neutral venue between Oxford and Reading. It was the mayor of Didcot who suggested the side play there

Oxford fans mainly live in the expensive villages around Didcot and get chauffeurs to the station. Better leave it there.

Yep, affordable housing at Vale of White Horse rental prices is far cheaper than OCC, so the heavily saturated areas of GWP & Lady Grove in Didcot do now house a significant number of people that would struggle with affordability in Oxford, and who require housing.

House prices generally are that bit cheaper in Didcot than other neighbouring towns like Wallingford & Abingdon etc.

I used to work for the Oxfordshire Guardian, based in Didcot, just a few years ago, it was always known mainly as Oxford territory with a smattering of Reading fans. A work colleague was actually a Swindon fan and tbf we had some great times winding each other up. For those that read the OUFC articles I can tell you that every Oxford photo had a Swindon emblem on it (he was the photo editor) small but it was there! Bosses never knew. He lives in Newbury so sort of in the middle of the three teams.

Being from Diddy Originally, in the seventies at school O.u.f,c was the main support in the town, being in the second div helped, but Reading and Swindon were represented a fair bit also, i have old school mates that are still going to Swindon and Reading, but at the present time i would say o.u.f.c is still the larger support

The main support in Didcot I would say is Oxford United.

I guess Didcot Town FC has more Reading merchandise/shirts, may be because the management there a few years ago (15+ years) had close connections with Reading e.g. Jamie Heapy’s (current manager again)/family were/are Reading supporters I believe etc. Plus I think there was a connection with Reading reserves/academy at one point too!

I also vaguely remember Steve Coppell bringing a 1st team squad there for pre-season friendlies in light of these connections.

I live in Didcot and I would say there are far more Oxford fans here than Reading. It's certainly a better place now than twenty years ago. Used to very very cheap housing but has risen sharply. M&S certainly thought it worthwhile having a food hall here.
For the avoidance of doubt I am not from Didcot originally and have never been to Didcot Town Football Club despite living very near it

The shire was always historically north of the Thames for the most part and the border between Wessex and Mercia, and was a key trading and strategic crossing point, hence why the conqueror built Oxford Castle, and why the university was formed here so that people from all round could access it.

We used to regularly play a first team pre season fixture at Didcot the last one 2015/16 (pretty good season) Would love to see it & Oxford City fixtures return.

It was sad to hear on @DanC podcast (well worth a listen) that Powelly doesn’t like to come to Oxford games anymore due to people saying that he could have made more of his career.
