I’m often thinking about ‘what we do and how we do it’…

(And still use the phrase ‘it’s one of them/one of those…’ thanks to Wilder/MApp)

I still can’t quite comprehend the difference in everything to do with Des vs the start of this year. He’s gone from looking as though the dugout was made from quick sand to now controlling games of championship football with the wind against him in lots of ways. He’s overcome so many challenges in such a short time that I can’t remember being this proud to have a particular manager. There’s not many managers I’d want us to side with even if we got relegated, but he is one.

I was impressed by Manning and what he managed to get out of a group of mentally battered players and a fragmented club before then going on to flip that entirely to a winning togetherness over just a summer. None of that has changed and I still feel he deserves credit for laying some very useful foundations.

But…. That said, it’s incomparable to where we now are with Des. We’re up a league and leaving our mark on virtually every opponent home and away. There’s not been a single game where we’ve looked unprepared, lacking in belief or effort and it feels like the squad has more gears to go through yet as the younger/less experienced players come forward and grow in to the season.

He’s improved our existing players immeasurably which, for me, is the number one requirement of any manager. If you can do that well, all the other metrics of success should fall in line. The price tags on certain players are growing by the week.

I hope he’s happy. He doesn’t often look it or sound it in interviews but I’m not bothered if he isn’t. I just want to see a new contract tbh.

I’m in love with Des Buckingham.
He gonna have to go on a shot gun frenzy around the training ground, before sneaking in to my house and blackmailing our kids at knifepoint to be Man City fans before I finish with him.

I don't really get that impression. Sometimes after games (esp on Saturday) he looks a bit frustrated and weary but I think he's in general felt pretty comfortable, relaxed but also very focused and professional in interviews.

A couple of limp 2-0 defeats wouldn’t be enough for you to hate him?

I'm petitioning Oxford City Council for a statue of Des in the city centre (preferred location on top of Radcliffe Camera). To save the council a bit of cash I've designed it for them. It's called Des The Redeemer.

I think on top of Carfax Tower would be a better place.

Bolton aside, I cant remember another match that we've lost by more than 1 goal?

Bristol Rovers away in January is the only other league defeat by more than one goal in 2024

And both were before the new coaching analyst was appointed, Bolton a game or two before.
Des finally got someone in that he asked for. I think it's worth considering!!

To see our FA make a clustermuck of our FA Education coaching pathway, with the media rightly, questioning it, is illustrated with Des.

A man who had to travel the world to get the opportunities he wanted, to work in an environment which does focus on coach education, to come back to the UK and be rightly lauded with being a pretty decent coach and tactician. Shame on the FA but more shame on the greedy cats at virtually every single Premiership football club. They ignore and block opportunities for our own coaches, forcing them to move abroad.

Let's enjoy Des, because unless he somehow and miraculously continues to drive this club forward quickly, then some vultures will come in for him.

Been flicking through this thread, stopping here and there and seeing the ‘I can’t believe it’ (the good and bad bits) theme and I note all the ‘how to do it better advice’ from the experts on here.

I think it’s simple, really.

Des is actually quite good at his job. Let him get on with it.

For as long as we can.

And are you pro or anti Des statue in the city centre?
