I said you can apply for asylum and then leave as a gesture to not burden the country whilst your application is processed, rather than loiter at the expense of the people. People whose stay is expiring are left in limbo especially if their claim may take a long time due to backlog or advanced screening. Many prospective immigrants who embrace the opportunity to be here leave, knowing they will be successful in gaining permanent residency. Many have income and a capacity to be a functioning member of society.
Funnily enough it’s always the people with legitimate claims and an established history who have to wait the longest and face the most scrutiny.
