That’s not what I said so read the paragraph again carefully. I said you can apply for asylum and then leave as a gesture to not burden the country whilst your application is processed, rather than loiter at the expense of the people. People whose stay is expiring are left in limbo especially if their claim may take a long time due to backlog or advanced screening. Many prospective immigrants who embrace the opportunity to be here leave, knowing they will be successful in gaining permanent residency. Many have income and a capacity to be a functioning member of society.

Funnily enough it’s always the people with legitimate claims and an established history who have to wait the longest and face the most scrutiny.

If a person legitimately enters on a visitor/student/work visa and then claims asylum 1, 2 or 3 years later then where is the lie if situations elsewhere have changed?

They have applied, been allowed in, we know who they are and they wish to stay as their place of origin is now unwelcoming, no issue with that.

For a visa's you have have to sign your intention to return to your country after expiry - very hard to legitimately say I can't return home when you made a statement to say you would.

Why? Things change globally during the period of a visa......... someone like the Taliban take over and some may not be in a rush to "go home" so should be able to claim asylum..........legitimately and legally.

But those aren't the people that were being discussed. It was about people not having routes to arrive legally as asylum seekers, not people who are here legally who then can't go home.

Fancy a country having rules that some people may not like.

Last time I checked a fair few of the countries they travel through are safe and they could claim asylum there so the "Safe Third Country" rule applies.

Far from it.......... choices.

Choice 1 - If you require genuine asylum claim it in a safe country.

Choice 2 - If you are an economic migrant arriving in the UK illegally and are an unknown quantity expect the State to make your life unpleasant.

Choice 3 - If you are already in the UK legally and things have changed for the worse "at home" claim asylum here and stay.
