Data bits

That's one bit of info that the bookmakers aren't very good at spotting in lower league football, a big centre back who goes up for corners and free kicks. Once they do score more than one or two, the odds come down though.

Based on the fact we have created the 5th best chances in the league from set pieces...twinned with Nelson receiving the 2nd best chances in the team it looked a sensible bet...just did it at the wrong time :ROFLMAO:

Really? That is a very surprising stat.
Good to hear nevertheless.

Duberry and Dunkley used to score a few like this. If the anytime odds are around 16/1 or more it only takes three goals a season.

Found this on crossing...https://www.optasportspro.com/news-analysis/the-art-of-crossing/

Basically on all crosses, hitting the penalty spot is your best bet...however delivering the ball from just inside the area ;)

Makes perfect sense really.

From the penalty spot you have the whole of the goal to aim at, you are close enough to the goal to have a decent chance of not missing the target, and far enough away from the goal to avoid the goal keeper and defenders.:)

I'd have loved to know the stats on the front post corner routine involving Matty Elliott. Unfortunately the wrong era.

We are not the only team who could lose a top player OOC with Nelson.
Madison at Peterborough, Carey at Plymouth, Eaves at Gillingham and Hylton at Luton ?

As we are nearing the end of the season, thought it would be worth having a look if those we have on loan are worth keeping. Starting with Sinclair...

(this is just a quick look in comparison to others in the league with over 1000 minutes).

So....Jerome Sinclair:

1325

This is off 1400 minutes, some of which at Sunderland.

Sinclair is performing pretty much in line with his xG however is shot volume is pretty poor...however this can be argued it is more a product of our playing style. He is pretty creative for a forward and fits our playing style in being effective at carrying the ball. Compare this to Mackie, who, as an attacking threat is very limited (should maybe compare aerial duels?):

1326

Mackie takes just over 1 shot per match, and isn't hugely involved in build up with dribbles and passing.

Extending Sinclair's loan deal would be a good move, as in a short time he has shown to be a decent goal threat that can also create. Refine our playing style and he would be an asset on a season long loan.

It would be interesting to see Sinclair's stats just playing for Oxford where he has been a lone striker as iirc, he played wide for Sunderland on a fair number of occasions (although could be wrong on that). It is noticeable he is getting confidence and KR's advice about staying between the goals for crosses is getting through and helping, imo.

So, a quick look at the wide positions. I haven't included Garbutt as he is quite tricky to analyse based on his games at LB. Essentially the question is: Browne or Graham? If we had the ability, who would we want to keep for next year?

Marcus Browne:

1331

This is pretty impressive. Browne both creates opportunities for himself and others. When it comes to crossing and passing its clear his game is to collect the ball and get into shooting positions. He is our primary goal threat from wide positions.

Jordan Graham:

1333

This is almost the opposite of Browne. When carrying and crossing Graham is in the top 10% of the league (for players in his position over 1000mins this season). The difference (that I think passes the eye test also) is the lack of opportunities he creates for himself. A pretty low strike rate and accuracy. This could be down to his shot locations, his focus around staying wide and delivering crosses rather than shooting himself. It would be interested to see the breakdown of his xA, if this mainly comes from set pieces.

In a straight comparison between the two, who would you keep?

As an aside, gavin Whyte:

1334

This is promising. For a first season full time in England (plus our player) he needs to get himself into better shot locations - this will improve his xG P90, along with shots on target. Creatively he is on a par with Browne and Graham. I think a move for him in the summer may be too soon, however a strong 19/20 improving on the above and he will be ready for the Championship.

This only takes into account attacking metrics, I may look in to defensive ones also so see who contributes all-round.

@Shosho can you do stats for our defence, specifically full backs? Long has clearly made an impact. But I wonder if it shows up in the analysis?

Sure - will give it a go!

Is pretty tricky to analyse defenders as it’s so depends on the rest of the team...will try however!

In a straight choice between Browne or Graham, I'd prefer Graham.

Graham seems to play more purely as a winger, whereas Browne varies more what he does. The stats certainly show that quite clearly.

If it was a straight choice, I would be taking Browne all day. Is a goal threat and creates. At the minute, Graham does one of these...does he have the ability to be a goal threat also?

KR speaking of getting Browne permanently...not sure if this is possible but we should be perusing it if it is an option
