They all have a job to do and at the moment they are doing it well. That includes the subs. I think it was important having got to 75 mins to ensure we did not concede another late goal. To that end everybody did their job including Dane Scarlett because we got the clean sheet. At game I was frustrated but in reflection I think he was told to hold his position and not get out of shape. I think there is a player in there somewhere.
I don’t think Harris offered a great deal today, so it was a good time to get some minutes in his legs.
Completely agree. I know we haven't seen much of him, but his EFL Trophy debut (Coventry) was just awful, and he's been terrible in the brief cameos we've seen since. I'm completely baffled. He must have the ability - but I can't see it. What gets me is the almost total lack of effort. He reminds me very much of a number of recent PL loanees who've had the ability but dreadful attitudes- Sonny Perkins the most recent example. Maybe Scarlett is going to work out, but first impressions of him are really, really not good at all.I...don't get this lad. At all.
Yes, he only got a few minutes in a tight game that we were battling for a point. However...
He can't, or won't run.
He can't, or won't chase down.
He can't, or won't track back.
He can't, or won't harry for possession.
What he can do is run the wrong lines and, when not in possession, stand with a body posture that makes it look like he's soiled himself.
How on earth this lad is the captain of the England U-20 I will never know.
Needs massive improvement, and sharpish.
O'Donkor generally put in a shift. So far, Scarlett hasn't. That's what I've found really odd so far.I don’t think we’ve got nearly enough evidence to conclude anything. He’s been limited to ‘the O’Donkor role’ so far which is a pretty thankless task at the best of times and not an easy job. O’Donkor actually did the pressing bit extraordinarily well at times but often went so gung-ho he couldn’t get back. I’m no expert but I think Dane’s role was actually just to fill a space and force the ball wide. Our shape was far more important than getting him a chance to win the game.
Whilst I don’t think he has done too much to get excited about yet, it also hasn’t hurt us at all when he’s played. We get flashes and I don’t think you can expect much more that when you’re getting the odd 10 mins here and there.
I'm surprised to see people say O'Donkor chased down a lot, I always thought his pressing was pretty lazy unless there was something in it for him in terms of getting the ball. Absolutely excellent at holding it in the corner and buying time but an effective presser he absolutely hasn't been.O'Donkor generally put in a shift. So far, Scarlett hasn't. Probably cause he's only played 30 mins in total. dear o dearO'Donkor generally put in a shift. So far, Scarlett hasn't. That's what I've found really odd so far.
Yes, that's very true. But I also think that if he was (say) an Academy player breaking through, a lot of the comments would be the same. He just isn't putting in a shift. It's pretty basic stuff. He’s a young player who’s had a few minutes, we can’t form any picture of him yet. It’s only because he’s from a top team that people are scrutinising him so closely.
He played 90 minutes at Coventry. Hardly broke out of a jog.Probably cause he's only played 30 mins in total. dear o dear
While he wasn't great today he was fine and contributed a couple of decent bits. It does seem plenty of people have made their minds up on him already, there's an absolute clown who sits near me berating him for not charging after their keeper like a madman. No chance of winning the ball and would have taken himself out the game completely but to some people visible effort, no matter how futile, is more important than common sense. Mackie used to do it a lot and get a decent reception for it despite the fact he never got a sniff of the ball and then spent 20 seconds offside so if we won it he wasn't an option, it was pathetic.
We've not seen a huge amount from him and it's too early to say either way how it'll go. I'm yet to be convinced but it does also seem people are going out of their way to find fault in what he does rather than judging objectively.
He shouldn't chase down lost causes. That's what Jamie Mackie did. But what he should be doing is press the opposition. And that's what he's not done in his appearances so far. Very early days, but so far he's been really disappointing.Mark Harris stood off the Bolton centre back and keeper for 90 minutes at Wembley and we won it comfortably.
It's amazing that people still think a striker should chase every lost cause, especially at a level where the opposition are good enough to play round it.
and how many league minutes with our 1st 11He played 90 minutes at Coventry. Hardly broke out of a jog.
The Premier League and betting - two of the worst aspects of modern footballThe lads around me who were bemoaning him for not blindly chasing down their goalie know so little about tactics.
They were the same football brains who were slagging off Kioso after two games (and were shouting at Beadle after one home game for not constantly hoofing it).
They spend most of the game shouting out the Premier League scores and talking about their bets so I’m surprised they even notice there’s a game on to be honest.
