By all accounts (no pun intended) conceding that penalty saved the club. The massive cash influx we received from the replay away at Stamford Bridge came sooner than any prize money we might have received for qualifying for the next round would have. We were so strapped for cash that we would have gone under before any prize money would have come in.

I'm not sure that is true. We would have been away to Sheff Wed in the next round, and would have received a large cash injection from that. Sheff Wed were in the top flight and doing well at the time, the crowd would have been good. I think the replay was played the week before the next FA cup round.

It was the timing of the money, not the size of it. The cash from the Chelsea replay came in sooner than the Sheffield Wednesday tickets would have. We were that close to folding we would not have lasted long enough to reach the next round's fixture.
