FA Cup Crystal Palace vs Man City

Couple of things.
1 - Pep is a serial choker - numerous big occasions he's screwed up. Very glad he isn't the England manager - he can do it in the league, but it is the big cup games and on-off occasions that he can't manage.
2 - Man City are an embarrassment off the pitch. Totally outsung and out classed by the Palace fans.

Guardiola is a choker?

Don't think VAR can bring it back for a yellow and free kick, only if a sending off.

Personally think Haaland would have scored from there but fortunately the decision enabled Palace to win.

As an aside, other than that Henderson was fantastic yesterday.
That’s correct. VAR could only judge whether or not it was a red card offence.
I thought a ‘keeper deliberately (and it was deliberate) handling outside the box was a straight red irrespective of goal scoring opportunity (personally I think Haaland would have got a shot away, so a goal-scoring opportunity).

That 6 year old also doesn't know what it's like to see his team fail. They have been serial winners for the whole time that boy has supported them.

A 6 year old kid just learnt a valuable life lesson.

Cheats don`t always prosper.

I think this thread has taught me a couple of things, Guardiola is a choker and that six year olds need to be aware of history and financial shenanigans, and someone once said that this forum is full of middle aged men with strange opinions.

Awful... get it right :ROFLMAO:

For instances like that, it really should be able to be brought back. A freekick on the edge of the box is such a dangerous position and the failure to award a freekick was a clear and obvious mistake.

Haaland may have scored but, for me, it is less than certain

This decision sums up how pointless VAR is.

It is still a matter of opinion and I'm confident different Refs will have different views on what is the right decision. Dermot Gallagher on Ref Watch will be doing mental gymnastics to justify the decision yet like other decisions he'll at some point argued the opposite for a decision that is pretty much identical.

And for that small % increase in 'correct*' decisions has harmed the spontaneity of football such as celebrating goals, ruining the spectacle of the game with stupidly long breaks in play.

*Most of those are opinion based decisions also.

I think that it is fine for clear and obvious errors.
Not the 6 minutes to give Forest the second goal just now!

If it isn't instantaneous like goal line technology (a brilliant innovation) then for me it needs to be binned off. What it harms far outweigh any advantages (which many would dispute anyway).

No changed a fair while back to yellow unless DOGSO.

in addition to this, most surprising red card offense I've heard recently - if a goalkeeper uses the support of the crossbar (ie hangs off it, is holding on to it) to make a save (from an attempt that is otherwise going in) - that is a DOGSO straight red.

Not that surprising for me. Whilst it won't change the size of the goal too much it could easily be enough to stop a goal. I believe it has been an offence for quite a while but could be wrong.

(pre) 2024 Erling Haaland would have scored from there. I’m not sure 2025 Erling Haaland would have.

The fact it was a bouncing ball, slightly wide. probably saved Henderson, plus the retreating defenders. I thought it was bonkers not to be a red at the time, but in hindsight I can’t see how you can categorise it as an obvious goal scoring opportunity.

Can we just agree VAR is cack and has no place in the game?

So somebody's big toe is offside........... so what? Its what we talk about after.

Of course the big clubs are more worried about that sliding scale of £££££`s than any enjoyment for supporters.

Only a few people on here and in the wider public actually know the current rules of football, what VAR is allowed for and how the rules have changed.

If someone can kindly check if i understand the sequence of events.

Did Henderson handle outside the area yes/no?
If ref spots it either yellow or red card.
Red card if for DOGSCO. (previously red for handling out of the area? did this go out years ago?)

So ref didnt give yellow.
Goes to VAR to see if a potential red card. Can't go to VAR for a yellow card decision and to award free kick (indirect?).

VAR says not DOGSCO so play continues?

That is how I see the decision was made but my understanding it would have been a direct free kick rather than indirect if given by the on field Ref.

As much as it pains me to agree with anything @Essexyellows posts, yes I agree completely. Although with it we would have beat Chelsea in the FA Cup when Kev Francis won the ball, and when Everton would have conceded a penalty for Oxford to draw 1-1 at Goodison in '85, both of which would have stopped me bitching on for 30/40 years...

Over the last few weeks I’ve seen four people with Crystal Palace tops / Leisure wear in Guildford. I’m glad for them they are celebrating their FA Cup win.

Just been reading that Palace might miss out on European football next year due to owners not being allowed two teams in the same competition.
They should be in the Europa league for winning the FA Cup, but one of their owners also controls Lyon who are also in the Europa League due to PSG winning the French cup (already qualifying for the Champions League) and moving Lyon up into the Europa League place. As Lyon finished higher in their league, Lyon take priority.
Similarly if they were in the Conference league, another part-owner also owns Brondby.

If they’re looking to replace them with another English team, I can only think that a previous winner of the League Cup who were denied European football should take their place.

Perhaps, say, the 1986 winners, choosing a year at random?

I am sure that UEFA wouod try and find a way to let Man U in through the back door

UEFA changed the rules the other year so that you could own two clubs playing in different UEFA competitions. Which I think coincided with them starting the league system for Champions League, Europa League and Conference League. As teams no longer drop down to the Europa League if finishing third in the group stage of the Champions League.

So apparently Forest could move up to the Europa League, and Brighton get the Conference League play-off spot.

I remember the many debates amongst sports programmes was whether it was a penalty and to my mind I think it was Gabby Logan who said it was a definite penalty even though the close up shot of big Keva foot was I fact in contact with the ball and not Viallis leg

Textor can put one of either Palace or Lyon into a Blind trust for 12 months and would get around it that way. It's the same as what the Forest owner has done due to him being controlling shareholder of both them and Olympiacos.

Wasn't the Forest owner then spotted running around on the pitch at the end of a recent game, given that he was supposed to have nothing to do with control or running of the club?

Hopefully they come up with something because imagine the Palace fans missing out on Europe.

It would be horrific for Palace fans, who seem like a good bunch and deserve their European adventure.....

.....but at the same time, it doesn't seem like UEFA's stupidest rule.

If it makes these multi-billionaires that own portfolios of European football clubs think twice about their decisions (if it basically means that two of their clubs can't be successful at the same time) maybe it'll bring some some tiny elements of sanity back into the world of football ownership.......

They wouldn't just be missing out on Europe. They could be replaced by their bitter rivals Brighton, if what you say above is right?

It's like us missing out in 1986 and being replaced by swindon!!!!!

By all accounts (no pun intended) conceding that penalty saved the club. The massive cash influx we received from the replay away at Stamford Bridge came sooner than any prize money we might have received for qualifying for the next round would have. We were so strapped for cash that we would have gone under before any prize money would have come in.
