Sport Cricket Summer 2025

The opposition isn’t up to much. Nor is the pitch. But good to see Crawley and Pope get a few, and I think Bashir has bowled very nicely today as well.

Hmm. Can't say that I am finding the English bowling attack very impressive. Apart from anything else, it's looking fairly undisciplined. I do slightly (!) worry how effective they'll be in a test match against the rather better Indian batters.

Stokes has looked pretty good!
Just hope that he stays fit enough to bowl for the India/ Australia series
He has - but there are two things. Firstly he cannot do it on his own and secondly I am not entirely confident that he will get through one hard fought test match without injury, never mind two series.

Great catch from Harry Brook. Was slightly worried that he might have pressed the ball against the grass but no-one seemed to object.

Agreed with Stuart Broad that you just need Stokes to be able to bowl a few overs in every innings. A really useful 4th seamer.

A good Test for Bashir- 4 wickets so far

I suspect the victory is what most people would have predicted beforehand, and there were of course good performances from some of the England players. Still quite a lot to work on before the serious stuff starts.

And it doesn't get much more serious than the next seven months - five Tests against India, then the Ashes in Oz.

I'll confess to being a little worried. Out batting lineup - particularly the middle order - is clearly our strength, but they can be a little brittle and we're coming up against first the best bowler in the world, and then the usual array of Aussie quicks on their home turf. Pressure's going to be on because the bowling attack now looks green and I don't think we're winning many games unless we put up some big scores.

Course on the flip side, if we do get thumped by both of them, that might be the end of Bazball, and we can get back to playing proper cricket. 😁

Is anybody watching the ODO v WI at Edgbaston?
Jacob Bethell looks some player. Some have suggested he will take the place of Pope in the Test team shortly at number 3.

England looking as if they will get close to 400 in their 50 overs.

If they don't get to 400 now they'll be annoyed with themselves I think.

Stunning catch by Chase to get Overton though.

He was in the Test team at #3. And averaged 50+ in tough conditions against a decent attack in NZ.

Then he (or England) decided he should play in the IPL rather than come back for the Zimbabwe Test, and Pope scored 171.

Whoever made the decision for him to stay in Bangalore, it was a bloody stupid one, because now there's a controversy. Bethell's 21 - there's plenty of time for him to make his IPL money; he should be establishing himself in the England team first. And trying to score a first class century, which he still hasn't done!

Well yes and the selectors now have a problem with Pope, Crawley both scoring big v Zimbabwe.
Probably the right decision would be to drop Pope and start Bethell, but not easy.

I mean, it's a crazy situation - in the next six months, we're going to go into back-to-back 5 match Test series against top class bowling attacks, and we're talking about playing a guy at #3 who has never scored a hundred in any form of professional cricket, and hasn't yet played a first class innings in 2025.

We still should probably do it, because the talent is unmistakable.....

......but man, wouldn't it be an easier decision if he'd played a few County Championship games, and against Zimbabwe, and scored a few runs against the red ball?

Crawley, Duckett, Pope, Root and Brook have all played at least one CC match (some of them 3 or 4) this summer, and turned out against Zimbabwe......why didn't Bethell?!?

Because (if I understand it right) he was on a very lucrative earner in the IPL and was told by the ECB that was fine and he could miss the Zimbabwe game. Seems a bit like the tail wagging the dog, but I suppose the way that England approach test cricket nowadays is pretty 'one day -ish' so perhaps the WI one dayers were thought to be enough of a preparation for him (???).

It does seem rather odd to old traditionalists like me though!

How good is county cricket as prep for a test series against India? Not a big follower so no real idea but England seem to pick whoever they feel has the most potential to play test cricket now rather than players who score etc in the domestic 4 day games.

Yes I think this is the point. The current management don’t really care how well you do in County Cricket, on the whole. They pick players that they believe will do well internationally, and who fit the mould of what they’re trying to achieve.

I guess the next two series will show if they’re right or not.

Drop Bashir, play Bethell and root as the spin option, Bethall @3 Pope @5

That would be a bold decision! Bethell's bowling average in first class cricket is a rather eye-watering 75 runs per wicket. For comparison, Root's average in Tests is under 50 and Bashir's is about 35.

I think you'd have to be very sure that the pitch was very much suited to pace bowling before you relied on Root/Bethell to rip through an inning on a turning surface!
