Sport Cricket - Summer 2022

England will do well to get anything out of the series v NZ ( the hope being that NZ are a little under cooked whereas England players gave generally done pretty well in the County Championship games)

That's probably our only chance.

If I look at the two squads, I think the only two England players that would get into the current NZ team would be Root & Stokes (would be appropriate given that our skipper was born and spent the first 12 years of his life there!).

Sign of where our Test team is at, because I don't think I've ever thought that before - most of the time in the past twenty years it's been the other way around.......

Think he missed all of last summer as well didn't he? Might be looking back to 2020, or early 2021 tour at the latest.

Last Test for Jofra was February 2021 in India.
He played some t20s later on that same tour. Not played for England since........

Come on, don’t be so pessimistic.

If we really apply ourselves, we might see some of the Tests go into a second, or even third, day of play.

I have just watched the roses t20 blast at Old Trafford on Sky. My team Yorkshire looked like they were going to lose on several occasions then looked like they were going to win and the game ends in a tie. Even my wife (not a big cricket fan) watched it until the end. What a player Harry Brook is and will be. Fantastic advert for the blast although the ECB seem obsessed by the 100.

A pretty much full strength New Zealand batting lineup were reduced to 19-6 in their second innings against a County Championship select XI. So there may be hope for the upcoming test series yet. 150 could be enough for either side to get a first innings lead!

And they lost in the end - to a team of players that weren't selected by their counties for the t20.

Maybe we should switch our squad last minute to get Ben Compton into the side? Match winning innings; 1000 runs in red ball cricket before the end of May (doesn't quite count as 1000 First Class runs because the game against NZ wasn't officially first class); five centuries already. Might be better than his cousin (I think)?

Certainly due to the prolific form he is in this season and given he is a specialist opener, he should be getting in ahead of Crawley? Hopefully he keeps it up and it gets to the point where they really can't not pick him. And yes, cousin of Nick.

I'll be disappointed if Brook doesn't get his chance in the first test but apparently it's not looking likely, with it due to be Bairstow - Stokes - Foakes at 5-6-7.

I suppose playing some sort of cricket is better than none, but I’d have thought playing 4 day county cricket in English conditions would be better preparation than thrashing about in the subcontinent?
Totally agree, and I'd have picked Brook ahead of Bairstow for that reason. Guessing that his 140 in Antigua has given him the slot again.

Im a great believer in playing players when they’re in form, especially young players who need to gain experience and confidence at international level.

Having said that, I love watching Bairstow when he’s in full flow, brave cricket and never backs down. Just very vulnerable to the straight delivery!

I'd probably go with this as the starting Xl on Thursday:

Lees
Crawley (I wouldn't but they haven't selected an alternative opener)
Root
Pope
Stokes
Brooks
Foakes
Potts
Broad
Leach
Anderson

Despite his ton in WI, i don't think you can pick Bairstow who hasn't played a red ball match this pre-season. Also, i think Brooks deserves his chance and batting at 6 should release too much pressure instead of being asked to bat in the top 5.
I know Root will bat 4 but he remains our best bat and should be batting at 3.
Potts over Overton for me - he is mid to high 80's MPH and offers something a bit different to Broad and Anderson.

England's recent form has been poor, despite that i am looking forward to the summer test matches. It will hopefully produce one or two new players to blood for the future. We should be looking forward to the home ashes a year next winter. Players like Pope, Brooks, Potts and Livingstone (convinced he'll get a chance this summer) should be looked at as potential stars of that series and this summer, with expectation relatively low, should be the time to give them a gig and see how they go!

Come on England!

Kane Williamson faced 9 balls for 0. Not sure that is better preparation?
Trent Boult is likely to miss the first Test due to the IPL but will likely play the second.
Things seem.to have changed with little preparation. That is a big advantage in theory for England ....
