Why all the fuss?

Thousands die from Flu, thousands die from knife & gun crime yet the world is slipping into overdrive for a bit of a snuffle*!

And its creating far too much work for me!! ?

*unless you have underlying health issues or are old.

Yes, it does seem like a lot of fuss. I suppose the worry is that it is pretty contagious and might mutate into something more deadly?

According to stuff landing in the mailbox with monotonous regularity.....

"Since this is an RNA virus, it will continue to mutate as long as it continues to circulate in humans. Additional mutations as the virus adapts to the human host may make the virus less severe or more severe, or less or more efficient in spreading."

On a positive note the global economic crisis it may cause will make Greta happy as less "stuff" is made & shipped around the world, fewer folk flying about to places, few less people on the planet.......... its a winner! ?

The implications on the global supply chain will be an interesting one - the reliance on China is acute in some industries and as a heavy consumerist society, it will be a fascinating year to see companies try and cope if this runs on and on, with travel restrictions coming in if things escalate. How dodgy eBay sites cope without their endless stream of cheap toot from China?

As an aside, it will be interesting to see if the anger internally within China percolates into a sense of political change.

To be fair she’s a child trying to raise awareness of possible climate change, so she deserves it... ?

She`s a child being manipulated ...........................someone far cleverer than I wrote this.....

"What’s infuriating about manipulations by the Non Profit Industrial Complex is that they harvest the goodwill of the people, especially young people. They target those who were not given the skills and knowledge to truly think for themselves by institutions which are designed to serve the ruling class. Capitalism operates systematically and structurally like a cage to raise domesticated animals. Those organizations and their projects which operate under false slogans of humanity in order to prop up the hierarchy of money and violence are fast becoming some of the most crucial elements of the invisible cage of corporatism, colonialism and militarism.”

News Flash!!!!

The government has announced they will build a 1000 bed hospital in 14 days.

The nimby's announce they will fight tooth and nail to stop them, already plans for a mass protest in London, hoping for 250,000 people to attend.

Extinction rebellion have announced they will support the mass demo, are asking for 1,000,000 people to join the mass protest. Statement 'we cannot allow the government, to build a hospital, without doing a wildlife survey first, this will take at least a year to complete, it will take longer to estimate the carbon output'.

Further questions have been asked by the 'save the badger brigade', if it will disturb any badger setts present, if so, calling all their supporters to join the protest.

The guild of funeral undertakers, have joined in, to get even more people to join the protests, and asking it should be extended over several days, stating that they have plenty of cold storage at mortuaries.

Extinction rebellion have replied to this request, asking if they have done a carbon footprint assessment, for the extra usage of the fridges.

That's the way to start panic, but whatever the gov will/not do, you can guarantee it won't be right. :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Can you enlighten us as to who said that please?

Hiroyuki Hamada.

If you put the first sentence into Google you will enter an entire wormhole of discussions and opinions across many platforms where people (cleverer than I @HampshireYellow ) discuss how Greta has been "made" the appeasing symbol of capitalism.

The reality is that if "we" want to do something about Climate change "we" will have to choose a less consumerist lifestyle.
Ditch the flights.
Ditch the car.
Stop buying plastic stuff from China.
Stop importing non-seasonal foods.

Above all..................

Stop shipping avocado`s from half way around the planet "because you can and want too".

I don't get it. They are thinking of cancelling Ireland v Italy at the weekend, why? Are the Irish also banning Italians from entering for holidays? No, thwy are not!

The Italians will still travel around the globe.

COVID-19: Approximately 79,553 cases worldwide; 35 cases in the U.S. as of Feb. 24, 2020.
V
Flu: Estimated 1 billion cases worldwide; 9.3 million to 45 million cases in the U.S. per year.

Why all the fuss?

Probably because people are dying and there isn't a known treatment. I don't think people in general think in terms of comparisons with other pandemics/illnesses. Also, the flu happens annually so is understood to a degree whereas this is new coming out of "nowhere" with the actual start of the outbreak not yet known. It isn't clear how it is spreading or where it is spreading to, when it will end and people in general don't like uncertainty for things like this so get scared about them. Then you have it reported on all the time by the media and it heightens those feelings which then feeds back into the media which heightens feelings...

Had a meeting this morning which included an expert in virology.

He's German, and pretty much the definition of 'No Nonsense', but he basically stated that the Coronavirus frenzy is a media invention.

His main argument was exactly the one that Eaststandboy made - sure, the disease is highly contagious but it's far less dangerous than influenza, and that doesn't shut down whole continents. There have been 2,770 deaths total attributed to Coronavirus worldwide. In the US alone, 12,000 people died of the flu last winter - despite the fact that we have a vaccine. And that was apparently a good year.

He also argued that the % of cases that were serious figure was probably highly inflated. Apparently more than 80% of verified cases exhibited symptoms no more serious than the common cold, and it's suggested that there's probably as many as five times as many people that have contracted the virus, but never shown symptoms bad enough to even need to head to the doctor, and therefore are not even being recorded.

His final argument was that the virus is everywhere already, so it's already too late to contain it. Therefore we should stop worrying about it, and go about our lives!
