International News Covid-19 .....

Which experts though? The scientist who discovered the new variant has said we're panicking, and that the symptoms in cases so far are "extremely mild". She's an expert. She also said it was in South Africa for some time before being identified as a variant and that it is already here undetected.

So, back to the original point, stopping SA travellers and testing them would be totally pointless.
I think you’re being complacent. We need to buy some time to check it out. Hopefully you’re right of course.

This could be your it's just 'a bit of a snuffle'* moment.

Variant reported to WHO last Wednesday.
3 cases in the UK located. (London, Brentwood & Nottingham - a school in Nottingham is lined up for a testing blitz BTW)
Contact tracing going on and isolating their contacts.
International travel testing.
Masks on buses & in shops (as advised by this place!)

Government act swiftly............. people complain.

Government do nothing............ people complain.
🤷‍♀️ 🤷‍♀️

At least you’re here to defend the Government every step of the way.
Labour and the Conservatives must owe you a big thank you for your sterling work over the last 50 years lol.

Living in the real world helps a lot, some people should try it. :)
Apologies, that was probably a bit below the belt.

On a more serious point. It’s worth noting that the Libertarians who want less restrictions and the more cautious members of the public that would like to see tougher restrictions are two separate groups. But unfortunately for the Government they also cross the political divide, which is a real problem for Johnson who wants to always go with the popular option rather than a more measured approach. So in the end he just sits on his hands and does nothing. Then everyone gets frustrated at him. He has to start showing leadership on this.

On the basis that people coming in from Africa a few weeks back are likely to have the variant, in all likelihood this is already very much amongst us and of course that was always going to be the case.

By all means checks should still be more stringent at the boarder than they already are (this particular issue has always felt lax) but the horse has already bolted.

Lets hope the results following more tests and research show this to be something the current vaccine can already substantially protect against.

That’s the problem, but it was only in the last week that this Omricon variant has come to light. I do think the government have acted very quickly over this and have taken the right action. No doubt there will be those who will say if the Omricon variant takes hold in the U.K. that the government were to slow to act when after the delta variant came to light the government were to slow to act and have tried to act fast this time.

Aye, no worries here, thank you.

Caution is the watchword but folk will choose to sit on the opposite ends of the see-saw.

Anti-vax types will say variants are caused by vaccination.

Folk who don`t want to wear a mask on the bus will complain about "lost liberty".

Most of us will just bumble along in the middle being mundane and getting on doing what's best for the majority.

Thats not contextually accurate though is it. It is far too early to tell and the modellers don't have enough data. It may be that the early signs are accurate. On the the hand, what we have learned so far is that complacency hasn't worked
Not contextually accurate?? This is the scientist who discovered the variant. In the spirit of listening to experts, are you of a medical background? Should I be listening to you or her?

Could it.

Well when all other countries have stopped the Omicron variant by rigid testing and border closures (they've already failed to do this), and the UK is the only country struggling to manage it (symptoms described as "extremely mild" by scientist who discovered it), then you are welcome to come back to this post for some morbid point scoring.
