International News Covid-19 .....

Some concerning figures in Germany for the last week or so. After constantly coming down since the start of the year, figures and incidence levels have flattened and are now starting to slowly rise again. Apparently due to the British mutation, which is now in one in four samples. The issue is that this has happened without any loosening of restrictions (apart from classes one to three going back last week). There is no further tightening that can be done to reduce the figures to levels were test and trace works reliably, yet permanent lockdown (two months full, four months "light) is not proving successful anymore. Only one way out seemingly and that is to vaccinate more, but the centres are empty (at least the ones offering AstraZeneca).

Quo vadis Europe?

Why are people not wanting the vaccine, especially the Astra Zeneca one, in Germany?

It’s likely to be more effective than no vaccine though, seems a bit crazy. Suppose that’s the modern world, everyone with access to the internet becomes an expert in every subject.
Yeah, I know that as well. But once someone from "up high" expresses doubts, then it spreads. Massive PR job on now to convince people to take what they're offered...lots of cases of people coming for their jab, being told it's AstraZeneca and then refusing it. Waste of time, thankfully not a waste of vaccines as it can be kept refrigerated (for a certain time).

Give me the bloody thing if you don't want it!

EDIT: Report say 1 million AstraZeneca vaccines in storage because nobody wants it. Nuts!

Why all the fuss?

Thousands die from Flu, thousands die from knife & gun crime yet the world is slipping into overdrive for a bit of a snuffle*!

And its creating far too much work for me!! ?

*unless you have underlying health issues or are old

Happy Birthday to this thread.
It`s worth a read back to see some of the foresight we had.

Classes one to three going back is why

Everyone refusing the same AZ vaccine that the EU wanted to restart the Irish troubles for?

Macron and German (and EU) politicians suggested tthat the Oxford vaccine was unproven for older people.
Whether this was political who knows but the comments were very ill judged. The politicians certainly scared people to the extent that they now dont want the Oxford jab (I believe this is in France as well as Germany,)
In Germany they are now talking about a third peak.
Europe's handling of the vaccines seems to have been incredibly poor.

They are doubling down/lashing out at AZ trying to save face on their contract balls up. And put pressure on AZ.

The UK has been a shitshower throughout this pandemic but this contract has utterly shown up the EUs incompetence and disabling bureaucracy on this one and they don't like it.

Classes one to three went back this Monday, and only then at reduced class sizes. No way this is already leading to another wave four days later.

Need to look at the strictness of the restrictions then

And close the schools again

"We've closed down so much cap'n, we cannae close down nay more!"
Well, I suppose you can close all supermarkets and stop people going out their front door. Aside from that?

I fear you may be right with the schools being closed again.

It is difficult. We had to take baby to hospital last weekend - very high temp and a rash. None of us have been out the front door for weeks. We disinfect everything that comes into the house, all shopping delivered etc. Covid negative but doctors sure it was a virus. Said they are still seeing people coming in with viruses despite not leaving the house.

What has been remarkable is, since the start of 2021 (until a few days ago at least), PHE have had NO reported cases of seasonal flu. The thinking being this is largely down to increased hygiene and social distancing measures, along with the increased uptake in vaccine over the winter. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/health/flu-cases-covid-england-phe-latest-b1805124.html

Quite incredible when you think how many cases (and deaths) we get in an average year.

Absolutely incredible.
I assume that when COVID vaccines are common place like the flu vaccine life will go back to normal (ish) and flu will return.
Will all of the improved hygiene, washing hands etc go back to how it was before the pandemic?

In amongst all the drama folk seem to have forgotten that flu happily kills folk.
Whereas Covid acts/behaves slightly differently the basics of virus reduction (hands, face, space) will remain with us for a long time yet.
