Other - Rest of the World Club World Cup 2025

22137 attendance in a stadium that holds 71k!

More titbits I got from the New York Times, but apparently the US-based organizers pleaded with FIFA to play the majority of games in MLS stadiums i.e. those with a 20-30k capacity for the most part.

And Infantino told them to sod off, so 8 out of the 12 venues have gargantuan capacities that are going to be partially filled and costing FIFA an absolute bomb.

Have given them away free in some places. Doubt 5 paid much at all, if anything.

As an aside, nice to see Steptoe has made it to become LAFC's keeper.
Gets the DAZN brand out on mainstream TV ahead of the Dubois rematch.

If DAZN has the rights how come it’s on channel 5?

Kinda of enjoying watching it on channel 5 though, FIFA hyping up an event then it ending up on straight after “bargain loving brits abroad”.
Does it stop for adverts every ten minutes?

So Maresca is complaining they will be at a disadvantage compared to Arsenal and Liverpool next season. Of course they could have gone with a weakened squad after all they have about 9 keepers for starters.

Or just not gone at all.
I believe FIFA have put in a rule where they can’t just play a weakened team and had to take a first team squad.

Edit: I knew I had read it somewhere. https://www.skysports.com/amp/footb...clubs-take-strongest-squads-to-new-tournament

I see Saudi Arabia are playing in the Concacaf Gold Cup - wonder who ensured they secured a place in that competition for Americas based nations?

I agree this is an odd tournament and one that many of the European clubs probably could do without....however...as a football fan games like Boca Juniors v Benfica have a real pull for me. I've just watched the highlights and it looked like a corker with a cracking atmosphere.

Bayern are currently ranked sixth in Opta's Power Rankings - but Auckland are down in 5,074th, over 2,500 places below English National League side York City.

So the equivalent of us playing Saxton Rovers I guess

I think you do York City a bit of an injustice!

The website it came from Opta Power Rankings. They are flanked between Kidderminster Harriers and Spennymore Town in the National League North.

Also interesting is that we are deemed on a par with St Etienne

NZ clubs turnover is 1.1 mil they get 2.9 for turning up good.business

But it is infantinos fantasy.

Empty grounds. Dazn paidna billion$ for TV rights that no one wanted but saudis bought it for billions before nuts!!!

FIFA another pat of the Saudi sports.empire

I believe the Saudi Royal Family gave DAZN the $billion to make a bid for the TV rights. Shortly afterwards, Saudi Arabia were awarded the rights to host 2034 World Cup, but that is of course completely unrelated.

Could be It is a bit like Confederations cup where upcoming WC hosts get an invite or the Copa America where a country gets invited to make up the numbers ? Qatar went to Copa America I think or was I dreaming?
We don’t get this with European Championships or AFCON because there are already qualifiers ahead of the tournament. itself.

FIFA binned the Confederations Cup in order to focus on expanding the Club World Cup. Whilst not a major tournament (and England never played in it since they never won anything), it was a useful dress rehearsal for the WC a year later.

I guess with only 10 members in CONMEBOL it kind of makes sense to invite a few extra teams to the Copa America to keep it fresh. It has been two additional teams for a while and they had six extra sides for 2024 - and then went and had it hosted by a non-CONMEBOL member in the USA!

European football all the way for me, Clive.

CONCACAF has loads of teams, and a qualification tournament to get into the Gold Cup. Granted - most of the teams are tiny Caribbean islands, but they would still like to play if they could.

Nah, they have guest teams for one reason, and one reason only. Given that the guest team in 2025 and 2027 is Saudi Arabia, and the guest team in 2021 and 2023 was Qatar......I will let everyone infer what that reason is for themselves!

(as a random aside - there are some teams that have and can play in the Gold Cup who are not able to play in any broader FIFA competitions because they are not independent nations but regions of others [mostly France]. So we've got Guadeloupe in the 2025 version!)

The Copa America was awesome. I went to see Uruguay vs. Bolivia at MetLife and there were about 50,000 Uruguayans there (plus a handful of Bolivians). Atmosphere was next level (game wasn't very close though!)

But that was a proper competition that the teams actually cared about. This is an expensive, pointless boondoggle.

The CWC is a tournament that a lot of the South American teams most definitely care about.

Thus far have liked,
1) 8 second keeper foul = corner.
2) ref cam cracks me up. But, shows the reactions speed. Which is pretty quick, might have to get the refs tested! ;o)
3) the atmosphere and vibes. If you've ever watched a match outside UK, interesting. Outside Europe, amazing.
4) streaming it via FAWANEWS (think one of the mods here suggested it to me 18 months ago)

This guy is completely deluded…

Most successful club competition in the world? Yes if you ignore the champions league, europa league, all other domestic cup competitions.

He also mentions about 40000 fans per match and no other league in the world except the premier league get that…there were over 50000 for the league 2 play off final between Wimbledon and Walsall.

Oh and I almost forgot, 52000 turned up for the national league play off final!

The measure of success in Infantino’s mind is revenue generated.

And it’s not from ticket sales either but the massive bung thrown FIFA’s way from Saudi Arabia.

Bring back Blatter. All is forgiven.

A few more stunts like this from Infantino and I think we will soon see players go on strike.

A friend of mine is currently in the states and he was offered tickets to one of the Chelsea games for $11 - these were not ticket touts either - they were apparently begging people to go in because there was about 50,000 tickets unsold or something crazy.

World Cup next year will be a calamity too. I haven't seen one game of the CWC yet I bet it's plagued with extreme heat, dead grounds, oh and the pitches are extremely narrow.

Nah, the atmosphere at the World Cup next year will be good. There are so many expats from every country here in the US, particularly in and around the biggest cities where almost all the games are going to be played, that the stands for every game will be filled and a good chunk by supporters of each of the countries involved. I went to a Uruguay vs. Bolivia game at the Meadowlands in the Copa America last year and it was just about the best atmosphere of any game I've ever been to - 50,000 nutty Uruguayans bouncing around the stadium will do that......

The CWC just didn't bring in the crowds or create a big atmosphere (apart from some of the games involving Brazilian/Mexican clubs) because it's a pointless competition that noone cares about! I certainly didn't try and get to any of the games.

The weather, however.......that one's harder to predict. Late May/early June in NJ this year was like being in Northwest England. 10-15C and a constant drizzle. Then late June/early July has been absurdly hot and humid. So it could be fine here, or it could be horrific.

The only good news is that there's a few more stadiums being used in the World Cup that have roofs and climate control (Dallas, Houston, Atlanta) or are further north (Boston, Seattle, Toronto) or both (Vancouver).....so you would hope that more of the afternoon games will be played there to reduce the need for drinks breaks etc. etc. Infantino has suggested as much.

for many of the games tickets were available in the week before for less than the price of a beer in the stadium. the only games really well attended involved the South American teams.
